Pretty much sums up what we already have heard:

As it stands right now, KDE will never adopt Mir, Kubuntu will probably follow suite, and the days of this Ubuntu flavor are probably numbered.

Very sad...
Most reviews agree that Kubuntu is an excellent distro, one of the best KDE distros for the average user. I'm not a programmer or anything like that at all, but it seems that the adoption of Mir will probably make Ubuntu compatible only with other distros using Mir as well. And that probably will mean the end of Kubuntu, as it will no longer be compatible with Ubuntu. It's awkward start to think in adopting a new distro in the (not so far away) future, but maybe it's necessary at this point. Thus, I would like to know if there's a Debian based distro that uses something like launchpad and also if it's useless in a rolling release distro.

If Kubuntu could talk ------ ‘The report of my death was an exaggeration’ As has been pointed out by some in this thread Ubuntu going to Mir in and of itself will not affect Kubuntu.Linux because it works. No social or political motives in my decision to use it.

Of course, I can't see the future (not sure I would want to!), but I don't think that Kubuntu (other than, at worst, the loss of the name) is going to disappear, even if Ubuntu were to end. If/and/or in the event that Ubuntu were to 'close shop', Kubuntu would most likely fork as a distribution (which in some respects, it has already done).Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

When I first saw your post I was thinking that you were suggesting a new name for a Debian based Kubuntu and didn't think much of naming a distro based on a release. But, when I read your post the second time the "link" popped out and it lead me to KWheezy. Very Interesting, and KWheezy looks well developed, if the tour is meaningful: http://www.kwheezy.com/en/tour/
EDIT: I downloaded the 3.8GB KWheezy 64bit iso and tried it out in LiveCD mode. VERY IMPRESSIVE!
Well designed and laid out, cleanly implemented. Interesting theme. Has Conky in the right upper corner. GoogleEarth, Firefox, thunderbird and flashplayer preinstalled. Very interesting arrangement in the system tray. GoogleEarth has the same "HTTPS format error" which prevents searching, but it doesn't crash attempting to search again.
Nice selection of systools displayed. Has some of the same faults as Kubuntu: tzdata problem, my wireless randomly disconnects and reconnects, but the eth0 connection is rock solid. Very good selection of software in the Debian Wheezy repository. The English have done themselves proud!Last edited by GreyGeek; Nov 03, 2013, 04:19 PM."A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.”

Ignoring Shuttlesworth and focusing on what it means to Kubuntu to be based on Ubuntu -- it will become more and more difficult to use Ubuntu as a base after Mark takes it to the solitary waters of Mir. When more and more time is being spent converting the base to something pallitable for Kubuntu, and less is being spent on fulfilling KDE's potential in Kubuntu, it will only harm Kubuntu.
This was made very clear to me when I gave KWheezy a test run yesterday. It has more of KDE that Kubuntu has, IMO."A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.”

I'm not sure if any of you have seen tanglu but its testing debian packages for testers to use between those long debian freezes. currently you can only run it via a live disk (installer is broken atm) it boots fast for a usb image. has kernel 3.11 (3.12 is target for release) and kde 4.10.5 (4.11.x is release target).Mark Your Solved Issues [SOLVED]

Originally posted by GreyGeek View PostI had tried Debian several years ago and was familiar with its three tiers of release. At the time I was all about bleeding edge stuff and the fun of bug hunting, etc... But, in my old age, I find that the bugs can out run me and my shooting skills aren't what they used to be. So, I am satisfied with a sedate platform, which is why I am staying with the 12.04 LTS (or Deb 7 KDE if I move there). While I am currently running KDE 4.11.2 on Precise, I found very little difference between 4.8.5 and 11.2, at least in how I use them.
Being that even IF I switched to Debian 7 KDE I'd still be running KDE and problems that arise would most likely be KDE based, this would still be the forum of choice. Calling it "Kubuntu" after Ubuntu has branched into an OS on which it would be too difficult to continue basing Kubuntu on, suggests that both a distro and forum name change is on the horizon.
However, one thing that should never change is the social etiquette of this forum. During the nearly FIVE years (my how time flies) I've been a member of this forum replies like "RTFM" or discussions that debase into personal insults and name calling have never been tolerated, regardless of how "hot" the topic, and "hot" topics were never censored or banned. Also very nice is the fact that users of Windows can get their questions answered here politely as well. It is a forum I never plan to leave, regardless of what happens to Kubuntu, because I will always be using KDE as my desktop. The reason is simple. It is, without a doubt, the best desktop available on a PC today.
And I too love KDE and Linux and I do wish that Kubuntu would remain supported. But if what you're saying is true, that may not be the case much longer. So, I may be looking for another distro as well. I appreciate you pointing me to Debian which I may check out soon (like next year or so).
