BYOD: Good for Linux Migration Into Companies

As many of us know, there are still a large number of companies that are using Microsoft as their enterprise desktop solution. The majority of these companies are operated by an older generation of "non-tech" business people who don't spend a lot of time, money or energy concerning themselves with the cost or flexibility advantages that Linux can bring to the organization so they trudge along doing the same old thing with outdated tech not understanding why there are so many issues and constant fees to address those issues.

As new grads and first time recruits are entering into this "antiquated" workforce, a new trend is beginning to take shape in the form of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). The good news about this new trend in the workplace is that many of these companies adopting this mentality will be encountering new employees who prefer their Linux tech and OS's over outdated and under-performing legacy proprietary models. These are good times for the Linux family of operating systems and as many of the pro's here at Kubuntu may already be able to testify, there will more than likely be a growing trend of more and more people turning to us for guidance and answers in the coming years in greater acceleration than ever before.

What are other thoughts, feelings or ideas about this new business trend do users have?

I was wondering what all the BYOD fuss was about, now I know, thanks. The only real opinion I have on this...liability, the company can quickly and easily distance themselves if anything happens, or on the flipside, a person's own personal device can be stolen or compromised, nobody is going to leave their own personal device(s) in the office overnight/all weekend, they'll take them to bars, on transit, etc...with sensitive company data on them? Hmmm. Sorry, I think like a lawyer, I can't help it, lol.

I'm sure there must be some kind of liabilities waiver a person has to sign as well as an understanding of their accountability of sensitive company data. Either that, or the company comes up with a way to where the data never leaves their cloud space and all actions and activities involving that data take place on company equipment. People move company data around insecurely anyway as there is no real way around it. All it takes is for some person to get hired on simply to collect as much data as possible then leave with plans to use that data against them.

The real point here is, this is an opportunity to see the Linux desktop environment increase in usage throughout communities. As more people bring it into the workplace and use it, more will see it and ask questions as well as possibly pick it up for themselves.
