I don't know about building your own Ironman suit, but a company out in Hawaii lets you fly like Ironman.
This water powered backpack is fed by the hose that dips down into the ocean below. So while you are restricted to flights over water, at least if you crash all you do is make a big splash.
The other option is a set of water powered boots just like IRONMAN.
