    Hold your laughter!

Yeah, so I'm just now upgrading [this particular laptop] to 11.10 from 11.04. I had disabled the nagging reminders a few months ago because they were driving me nuts, but finally decided today to go ahead and do the distribution upgrade. The other computers in this house? Well, they're going to stay as is for the time being--including my mom's, which is still running 9.04 (or is it 9.10? ).

    Laugh?? No. Cry? Maybe

But hey, if it works for you, it works and that is what ultimately important.

I won't have to say much on how much better KDE is now in newer version, I am sure others can chime in ......

I was trying to find any isos for my first full-time distro, Lycoris, now long gone. It had KDE 3.0. I wanted to give it a whirl in virtualbox for nostalgia, but can't find it. My paid-for cd's and booklet were lost in a move last year.

      What laughter :-)
On one desktop PC, I've got 12.04; on a second PC here, I have 8.04 running.
      And there ya go.

No laughter, I think that’s extremely cool and demonstrates how reliable linux/buntu is.

I believe I still have the disc pack for Suse Professional 9.3 somewhere. I got it at Best Buy in Wausau (~35 miles north of where I live) back in 2005 and was my first time really delving into Linux. It had kernel version 2.6.11, Firefox 2 beta, OpenOffice 2 beta, and KDE 3.4. I haven't used it in the few years since I've move mainly to *buntu.

I'm taking the plunge and continuing to the next upgrade, all the way to 12.04!

Qqmike, I'm glad there's at least one person running an older version than me.

I've come to realize that 12.04 is pretty good.

My first Kubuntu was 8.04. I remember it as the most stable distro ever. There are some things about it I miss. Such as being able to have a different background for each workspace.

That has been there for a while now

In virtual desktop settings look for the "Different Widgets for Each Desktop" option and viola!

Don't know how I overlooked that. Probably because I did not know it was there.

claydoh beat me to it, but, yes, different backgrounds per workspace is definitely there. I love that.

Okay, I'm upgraded all the way to 12.04 now! (On this laptop only.) So far, so good. I had to replace its...um...UGLY icons...again (in the panel), and am now missing an icon for my Internet connection, but whatever. I'll fiddle around with that later. The only thing puzzling me at this moment is the 'activity manager' thingy whose purpose I don't quite get. Yet. More fiddling later...

Activities are kinda like virtual desktops on steroids a bit. Technically speaking, an Activity can be viewed as a grouping of virtual desktops. But that is not very clear, and imo there is no really good definition of them.

Activities can be turned off and on, and can have applications assigned to them. If I have a "Writing" activity, I can have whatever set of widgets I might want there, and have Calligra Words open when I turn it on. But overall, they have added a lot of the functionality back to virtual desktops so that there is not as much a difference between them and Activities. I prefer Activities as I can turn them off and on quite easily which saves resources on my older laptop here.

                          Thanks for the explanation, claydoh.

BTW, I got my missing icon back.
