I know there are dedicated devices for taking heart rate and they do all sorts of "bells and whistles" and they look tres kewl but this app along with a couple others, like google maps, just pay for the phone as far as I am concerned.
It is totally and utterly free in Play Store.
One has an advert at the bottom but it does not "get in the way" of anything or slow down the app and can be ignored.
I had it checked at my fitness center and it is dead on accurate and.....
It is INSTANTANEOUS while you are doing the "fitness thing".
I do "interval training", went through several versions and have settled on a combination of mostly fast walk/walk, and jog on soft surfaces.
To check the heart rate one just.......
One can save it, share it in a variety of ways, and there is also the obligatory "if you want to sign in to our website" thing, which I did not do.
Just amazing..
Here is the site for the app I am mentioning, by Azumio.
Here is a site which offers reviews of, supposedly all, of the PHYSCAL DEVICE heart monitors and they range in price from high to higher.
They DO a lot more, but I, personally think that if one gets the "basics" of exercise right and one does not have a particular condition with which to deal then...hey...

Here is a the Google Play review of a paid app and, as one can see, it does a LOT more...maps, all that:

The problem with all the "other stuff" is..... a GPS signal! lol
If you can't get it then the other stuff is, by and large, wasted.
I have "My Tracks" on the phone which records distance, elevation, etc. but if the GPS is occluded by clouds or HomeLand Security has repositioned the satellite to steer drones somewhere in the world, the app does not run.
Same for GeoCacheing. No GPS, you are out of luck if you don't have good "tower" coverage".
But, hey, to get back to Instant Heart Rate...it is a big thumbs up for me! lol

starts the app and puts one's first digit(finger) over the camera/flash.
The camera records the heartrate from the pulse in the tip of the finger.
