My parents want to buy a notebook PC and I want them on Kubuntu, but their stinking printer isn't compatable with it (thanks Canon). I figured I'd get them on the latest Windows and simply switch them to Kubuntu when their printer dies, but looks like I'll have to make sure they get 7 and not 8. What is it with these new stupid interfaces?

So I thought I'd check this stuff out. The other day I installed Windows 8 in a VM and also the Office 2013 preview. After using the new Outlook for four days, I had to stop. My eyes were in great pain. The entire UI is white: there is almost no distinction between menus, buttons, input fields, and other control surfaces. All useful and customizable visual distinctions are gone. The only visual element you can adjust is some frippery background graphics in the upper right corner, which is amazingly distracting no matter which setting you choose. It's insane.

Which is why Microsoft has produced a new device for use with Windows 8. Plug 'n' Play Eyeballs
