Just did a google to find out more and found this hilarious picture of the back of the box:


Apparently the virus protection is to "reduce virus noises and to obtain perfect image transmission." Its about time somebody came up with a solution to HDMI cable virus noises. I run an HDMI to my TV to watch movies and sometimes the viruses in the cable are so noisy that I cant hear the movie!

It's a solid bet the company making this product (or at least it's packaging) is non-English speaking and isn't paying for professional translation.

Decades ago, it was worth buying products from China and Korea just to read the labeling and instructions. It's somewhat less obvious today, but still out there. Go to eBay and look at the monitor descriptions importing from Korea - too funny.

I'm beginning to think this is whole thing is some kind of hoax. Gizmodo has picked it up, and their post shows a slightly different photo of the back of the packaging: no suspicious shading like in the Sophos pic. So I'm not really sure what to think at this point...
