Ok.....think "almost"....
Peter Gunn series on t.v.
Thunder Road
Naked City
gritty film noir filmed on location for a small part....
If you actually read the "Shadow" books he had a "maniacal" laugh......which means ...."CRAYzeeee".....
Most modern folks have been imprinted on the beginning segment of the radio show for the Shadow......and the modern movie....
So they expect the Shadow's "maniacal" laugh to be a "cool" laugh...in this no ....it is just CRAZY as in ROGER CORMAN STOOPID BLANKETY BLANK CRAAAAZYYYYYY" and that would probably not be understood by todays...."tres chic teens" with their ipods...but..
well.......the Shadow serials of the early days that one buys in the dollar bins.... were just plain BAD,
with a capital B and A and D!!!
but, after dining at my normal watering hole...on the most delicate bif, mushrooms, sliced don't know what thing similar to potatoes, but not potatoes....I NEVER ask them what they are serving I just sit myself at the bar so that I can watch them prepare it, lay fifty bones down next to the oh so wonderful libation/wine and just ENJOY..... I walked down to...
The local cd/dvd gourmet bistro who tipped me onto this one....and it is just great....
Now....yes..... the main actor is shall we say.................WOODEN......but pass him by for the great "dissolving" effects for the Shadow, the real, but generic, location shots from New Orleans....
and.......the great INTERIORS......and the relatively good....authentic to the period.....jazz combos.......
But.....THE GREAT SHADOW EFFECTS film noir on the brick walls and the interiors.....and the MARVELOUS dissolving effects.....
and you'll forget the "wooden acting" of the MAIN ACTOR....
The side actors are just @#$%^&* GREAT!! I mean GREAT!!!
and the INTERIORS!!! what a HOOT!!
The great 1950's dresses of the women....
the "jive talk" of the jazz set members....
JUST A HOOT!!! REALLY!!
If you are a fan of any of the "noir" genre and "the Shadow"....you should get this one, grab some chips/pizza/soda/libation..... and the wifey or husbandy, or othery....not the kids unless they are willing to give you a "willing suspension of disbelief"......and pop this one into the DVD player
and enjoy.
This review which does not mention "the Shadow" AT ALL...is ALMOST as bad as the "Burning Bush" which had some GREAT jazz in it but was totally screwed up by the Hollywood smart people....it was originally "the Town Without Pity" and Gene Pitney did the title track which went GOLD....but no the Hollywood people are SOOO smart..... anyway.....the film is about the Shadow and
is a HOOT"
