Linus might not like Gnome shell 3.4 but I do. In fact I like most of the common desktop environments for Linux. I am currently using XFCE 4.8 right now but may change to KDE within the next 12 months. Planning on upgrading XFCE 4.8 to XFCE 4.10 later on this year then changing to Debian 7 using Gnome 3 or KDE 4 when it comes out arounf February or March 2013.
I also use Lubuntu on a USB stick and think it is just as good as the other desktops, just doesn't have features like those found in KDE or Gnome.
