    Internet speed tests VS browsers

A recent kernel bug has me using Windows 7 at the moment. I was bored and decided to run some speed tests to see how it performed. I prefer http://testmy.net/ It was interesting to see a big difference between Firefox, Chrome, and IE9. Firefox was the fastest at 707 Kbps down, and 548 Kbps up. Chrome was right behind with 693 Kbps down, and 359 Kbps. IE9 was the slowest at 479 Kbps down, and 208 Kbps up. My connection is advertised as 768 Kbps, and 400 Kbps up. I will have to try this with Firefox and chromium in Linux later to see if there is any difference.

It has something to do with 3D. If I try to run Unity/compiz or Kwin with effects, the whole system eventually locks up. Unity 2D or Kwin without effects on run fine. The only way out is a hard shutdown. There are no logs kept to debug with. The machine doesn't respond to ssh, and sysrq doesn't work either. I have no way of reporting it. It actually started with 11.10 and kernel 3.0. I ran 11.10 with the 2.6.39 kernel. Opensuse 12.2 is using 3.3.1, and doesn't have this bug (12.1 did), so I'm hoping it has been fixed in 3.3. I might grab the 12.10 kernel this weekend to test because it is now 3.4.0, but right now I just need to get some work done without fiddling .
