    Upgrade experiment successful...

    Hi all....

The "challenge" Steve issued here (post #13) has been successfully completed. I was able to upgrade to each version one at a time from 10.04.4 to 12.04 (using Ubuntu,...Kubuntu wouldn't work on my copy of VirtualBox for some reason.) Each seemed to work well, except that the newer versions are slower than 10.04 and that almost the entire 8 GB's of space I allotted for the virtual disk has been used up.

Also, I wasn't able to upgrade to the pre-release version of 12.04 in time. And the amazing thing here is.....I did this entirely without touching the terminal!!

If anyone has any questions, I can try to answer them. I didn't play around with any of the versions other than to use the update manager service.

    Regards...

    Too cool!

You might be able to reclaim some space by cleaning out a few directories...
    • /tmp
    • /var/tmp
    • /var/cache/apt/archives (with sudo apt-get clean)

Also try sudo apt-get autoremove and deborphan.

      Thanks, Steve!

At least we know now that it's possible.

Well done, that is how it should work. I think most upgrade problems come when people install extra ppas and forget to remove them first or accidently get (k)ubuntu-desktop uninstalled some how.

What would be interesting is what happens if you uninstalled (k)ubuntu-desktop first then do the upgrades.
