    Ubuntu for Android demo video

      cool but my phone doesn't have a fancy dock , do i need one to use this?also, if its ubuntu that should mean i can get rid of all that GTK and unity stuff and install some kde packages.(iirc we have them for arm). and i think we have active in a ppa somewhere (i remember reading that here) so, you should be able to install and modify to have Active instead of unity.

              Unsettling? No. Commercialism is the entire purpose of that page.

              http://www.ubuntu.com/project/canonical-and-ubuntu
              As the leader of the Ubuntu Project, Canonical knows Ubuntu inside out.

              Working with a close-knit team from the open-source community, Canonical is responsible for delivering six-monthly releases, as well as co-ordinating security, trouble-shooting and providing an online platform for community interaction.

              The number-one provider of Ubuntu services, Canonical works closely with businesses and individuals alike. Canonical also develops bespoke systems, provides comprehensive support and all the training that’s necessary to get everybody up and running. With more than 400 employees in over 18 countries, the company continues expanding to support the millions of Ubuntu users around the world.
              IF they can't turn a profit with Ubuntu and their other software projects then they won't be around after five years, which is what I project Shuttlesworth's time line to be in order to turn the corner and generate more revenue than expenses.

              I've never been against proprietary software, or even commercial versions of Linux. I've purchased two dozen copies of commercial Linux over the last 14 years, about $650. which is about what I've paid for a half a dozen copies of Windows during the same period. In fact, Windows has never been a problem for me to run because I know how to keep it fairly safe, or at least how to detect when it has been infected, although I NEVER use it for commercial activities like on line banking or shopping. And, I never visit the web sites where Trojans and such mainly reside, because I don't view or download porn and I don't download bootleg copies of software or movies. In fact, I've rarely used Windows at all since I retired nearly four years ago. While most Joe and Sally Sixpacks have trouble running WinXX and keeping it secure, except for past episodes of bugginess and lack of stability, which has generally disappeared since XP SP3 and Win7 (ignoring VISTA), my complaints have been with Microsoft itself, and its criminal business activities and ethics. If our Congress wasn't worse Microsoft would have been given the AT&T treatment a decade ago.

              IF Canonical were to adopt those practices made infamous by Microsoft I'd be on their case with equal vigor.

                Perhaps "unsettling" was the wrong word. But it was just a bit weird for me to see language like...

                * complete desktop solution
                * easy to integrate
                * drives sales
                * drive adoption
                * target the enterprise
                * a compelling reason to upgrade
                * adding a desktop...justifies the extra cost...

                The word "drive" is used four times as a verb. It was just really jarring for me to read corpo-speak on a FOSS page. But yeah, I understand Canonical's motivation here.

                  Ya, I can see your perspective... a bit over the top, even Microsoftian, perhaps.

                    Which precisely explains my reaction. As I read through that page I was thunderstruck at how the thing reads so close to a Microsoft marketing playbook.
