There's another announcement thread on it here: http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthr...uture&p=287135, but seems like the announcements section is currently off-limits to regular users...at least I can't reply there :P.
I don't think that's necessarily as bad as it sounds. I've long held the opinion that the less influence Canonical has on kubuntu the better off kubuntu will be.
It's always unfortunate to lose a paid developer, but it's not like Canonical has really done much to promote kubuntu anyway.
Yes it is unforunate when a paid developer has to stop contributing.
Luckily the Canonical infrastructure like the repositories will still be available.
I read that Canonical was not happy with the limited uptake of Kubuntu and understand the value of such in a commercial sense.
But at the same time Canonical has done a lousy job of promoting Kubuntu, like for a while there is no reference to it from the front page.
But with Unity being a dog and still based on Gnome there will be more and more users looking for a better desktop experience and finding KDE on Ubuntu is a fine choice.

I was having trouble posting there as well.
Since I'm assuming then that KDE packages would move from main to universe, where XFCE (Xubuntu) and LXDE (Lubuntu) reside, will we see updates through the official repos (updates, proposed, backports) instread of through the PPA's?
The unjust distribution of goods persists, creating a situation of social sin that cries out to Heaven and limits the possibilities of a fuller life for so many of our brothers. -- Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires (now Pope Francis)
