Greatest U.S. map you'll ever see.

This is a very interesting article about a map made by one man which got "best of show", with pictures of the map.

Well, I'll be spending a few hours pouring over one of those. I love maps. Always have. Probably would have chosen a career involving cartography/geography if I hadn't already been attracted to computer networks and security.

    Thanks for link, woodsmapke!

Hi Aardvark, thanks for the comment!

        Hi SR
one of my "favourite things" is a very old, all cardboard, in two "half shells" and coming apart because of it's age, is a globe that was manufactured in 1932.

It was a the high school whereat I taught for many years and the state came through one day and said pitch.. and then went on a spree putting pieces of tape on things to pitch.

The globe was one of them.

I asked the custodian for it and it has stayed in my study/office since then.

My mother bought a set of maps when I was a little kid for me to study they were so large, like 4 x 6 feet that I could crawl around on them. That influenced me greatly.

If you happen to know of R. Buckminster Fuller, I had his canvas "dyamaxion air-ocean world map" at my school one time. It took two years to schedule it and they were there one day, but it was well worth it seeing the kids walking on it in white socks.!

And lest the gentle viewer think, HO-HUM.....

Here is a practical application of how the map can actually explain something. It is a map of the expansion of "mitocondrial genetics" from Africa.

We have all heard that "humans began in Africa" but then people start thinking about how could people possibly have migrated, and think of the NORMAL MAP.

Look how it shows up on Bucky's map. It is easily seen how people could have migrated from Africa.

        yep, maps are wonderful things!
