Linux computer as "appliance" mine is a radio! lol

Ol' Bill once said that he wanted computers to be "appliances"...so "in the background" that people "just used them" and did not think of them "as computers".

I just realized this morning that I went to the kitchen, and while making breakfast, I had taken a laptop to the table last night, I walked over and navigated to a local radio station and was listening to the weather forecast in the stream.

This is what "we" "all" USED TO DO....with our radios in the morning before going to school or work.

I "treated" the computer as a radio and did not even think about it until later.

Now, the signal is not "going through the air", but the effect is the same.

Could one do that with a Windblows computer? Yes, but it would COMPLAIN MIGHTLY if the stream was in something like an mpeg format or in a .pls format.

As Marshal McLuahn once opined: The Medium is the Massage (massage is spelled correctly).

I know what you mean. I have a Rhapsody account and listen to streaming music on my laptop--while my collection of CDs sits untouched on shelves. (My albums--you know, VINYL--sit on a shelf in the garage.) I listen to my favorite radio stations without ever touching a radio, either on a computer or my smartphone. My how things have changed.
