    Where is it for linux...

Hello. When I ran windows I had this little program called "where is it"

It helped me keep track of mp3's and files stored on cd and dvd's.

    I really miss that one..

Does anyone know of a similar program for linux ??

If there was one I would be very happy..

I'm not entirely sure about what you want...

Kat is like Google Desktop search but it hogs memory while scanning dirs..

I think I sawing something like what you're looking for on http://www.kde-apps.org

For search for things I use the locate protocol.

Could you give a link to the "Where is it" program?

It is not just a search application..  but if you see the screenshots and read a little about it Im sure you get a fair picture on how it works...

Thanks for the link to kde-apps..  I didn't know about that site..

Re: Where is it for linux...

To me it looks like Tellico (collection manager for KDE)(more or less)

        Code:
        sudo apt-get install tellico
        Or to see info
        Code:
        apt-cache show tellico
Try it out, it's ok of me.

Looks like a good program..   but..

when I try to config / compile I get some errors..

I'm not so good at this part..

after installing some of the things it asks for it gets down to this : (this is what i get after typing "./configure")

          Code:
          checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnulibc1
          checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnulibc1
          checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnulibc1
          checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking for -p flag to install... yes
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
          checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... no
          checking for kde-config... /usr/bin/kde-config
checking where to install... /usr (as returned by kde-config)
checking for style of include used by make... none
          checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
          Any ideas what's wrong ?

can import CSV, RIS, BibTeX, and BibTeXML files; and export CSV, HTML, BibTeX,
BibTeXML, and PilotDB. Tellico can also import data from Amazon, IMDb, CDDB,
or any US-MARC compliant z39.50 server.
                 .
The files are stored in XML format, avoiding the need for database server.
It also makes it easy for other softwares to use the Tellico data.

Maybe it's because I'm on Breezy.

You should because it's where about 80% of KDE apps for Kubuntu live.

And it is supported.... sort of.

                    You should enable all.

Re: Where is it for linux...

Now I have enabled it. And installed Tellico.

Tellico doesn't have that essential part where it scans through my mp3
dvd's and index everything so that I can sit on my computer and search for a song or album and then be told what dvd number it resides on..

                      But it was very close..

Re: Where is it for linux...

Not to butt in here, but where exactly are your MP3s? Do you have them in DVD ISO images or something? Or are they on DVDs directly?

If the former, access is made a bit harder with few advantages I can see.

If the latter, why not buy a 300+ GB hard drive and move them all there? There's a much lower likelyhood of scratching them that way, as well. You could even do an external drive so you'd have the capability to move them around and take them with you easily. Then keep your DVDs in case your HDD dies.

At low bit rates, that's 100,000 songs or more. At high bit rates you are still looking at 30,000+ songs. At 4 minutes per song, that's 120,000 minutes or 2000 hours of unrepeated music. That's a full year of 5 day a week, 8 hour per day listening pleasure...

                          You're missing the point.

I am looking for a way to make a serchable index of the dvd's.

Not search in the data mass itself.

I want a database sort of thing that dont take up 300 gig's.

If you look at whereisit's web site you see what i mean.

Yes they are on the plates as .mp3.

                            Yes, you are right. Sorry.

Have you stumbled across Tellico yet? It actually looks nice enough that I might download and try it myself just to see what it does.

                            http://www.periapsis.org/tellico/

The various bits on it's home page mentions that it will scan and import mp3 info as well. I do not know how it'll handle removable media, but perhaps it'll work fine with that as well.

Let us know if Tellico works for you or if you find something else!
