I have always told my classes that an ever growing stack of 3 x 5 cards will trump native intelligence in both the short and long term.
And, starting about the third year I was at the college i give each students, formally, in the first class some 3 x 5 cards that I myself pay for and also show them the receipt to prove that I think "studying" is very important.
And, without even knowing that I was doing it, I have always used a phrase somewhat like: "You guys must have really studied hard to blow this test out of the water like you did"...or something like that.
It looks as if there is now physical proof....
