Re: Knoppix live DVD is awesome!

@GG: Ah, I didn't know that. I was using Wikipedia as my reference point (with that little intro secction on the right).

@dibl: Aptosid looks interesting, but I wouls personally like something I could update easily from within X (and any DE/WM) without too much trouble. I wonder if we'll have something like that for Ubuntu-based systems, or that monthly-cycle idea somebody had a while back.

@woodsmoke: Good thing I'm still single.

I hear you, but have you noticed how often that so-called advantage (being able to update *buntu from within X) turns into a requirement to reboot the computer? With aptosid, the only reason to reboot is to boot a new kernel. Otherwise you can just go back to init 5 and log in to X again and keep on running.

Knoppix is troublesome as an installed system because it mixes unstable, testing, experimental, I think even stable repositories. grml and aptosid track Sid fully, with only a couple of scripts or fixed packages, so you're less likely to run into dependency hell.

You can go to init 1 and back to 2 in the *buntus too
But I do like the Red hat runlevel style better myself too.

You can also, while running in X, use "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade -d" to download the upgraded packages, for later installation in init 3 (aptosid) or 1 (*buntu).

That's how I dist-upgraded from Squeeze to Sid a few weeks ago on a secondary machine.
It went on without a hitch. Except for the fact that I screwed up the system later on

Hey, why haven't the Debian people ported ceni to the mothership yet? It's the best networking application in Linux, period.

Yep. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt!

It is a marvelous little network configuration utility, that's for sure. "kernel-remover" is a nice cleanup tool, and their installer is substantially slicker than some others I could name. And talk about fast installations .... I've seen 5-minute installations of the aptosid OS.

Yeah, those were the guys from the CrunchBang forums, they made a port.
But it's no problem really, I installed ceni straight from aptosid's repo in Oneiric. It has few dependencies.

Huh -- I never thought of that, but it seems like a fine idea. I wonder if some of these Kubuntu users with wireless connection issues might find ceni a reasonable way to get it configured?

Re: Knoppix live DVD is awesome!

Most probably. It's better than pure ifupdown, because it handles resolvconf and wpasupplicant rules. Like, it configures WEP with WPA rules, so wpasupplicant can take over control. I found that I couldn't get an automatic connection with allow-hotplug on wlan0, probably because of Ubuntu's resolvconf being slightly different. But the auto stanza worked like a charm.

You can get ceni via smxi as well, which I find hilarious concerning the relationship between the smxi and aptosid devs. And smxi works for Ubuntu now, at least that's what they say. Somebody could probably look into the resolvconf differences and make a port. I guess not enough people do netinstalls and use anythin other than a full DE, so nobody really cares (I'm on scrotwm, and make use of non-X components, so a connection on all runlevels is important).

I'm sure you could do the same thing in any GUI-based distro (only reboot on kernel update, logout and log back in to X on updates to X or KDE/Gnome/etc.). I have updated and (dist-)upgraded from within X and outside it without too much if any trouble.

You will only get in trouble when dist-upgrade pulls in, and attempts to install, new xserver-xorg packages while you are running in X. That's why aptosid requires that you go to init 3 to do the dist-upgrade -- it is safe to upgrade X packages in that environment.

I know that the developers of aptosid say this, and is why they insist on doing package management 'outside of' a running X. But, how many times have we, running Kubuntu, seen new xserver-xorg packages come down and get installed? I know I've seen them, and I have never had a bad experience.

My thoughts exactly. I've done upgrades from within X on (K)ubuntu and a couple of other distros and I've had no problems either. I just log out and log back in (or reboot just to make sure) to continue.
