got it wrong....the classic priogue does not have buff ends but actually has "bow" ends...which makes it MUCH EASIER....to go in either direction...

But.....placing the name "City of New Orleans" on his "buff end" john boat was a great compliment to all the folks who made white pine pirogues... because they rode the train down to visit with sisters and cousins and aunts...numbered by the dozens.

As an aside, pirogue is pronounced pee-row. Having lived in or near Cajun country I used the word for years with out knowing how to spell it.
