Our computers, HDs, magnets, phones, TVs, etc..., DEPEND on Rare Earths. China controls 97% of ALL Rare Earth resources. China's labor is cheap and they don't have the environmental protects or workers rights that 1st World Countries have.

Summary: The Japanese have found HUGE deposits of Rare Earths on the sea bed of the Pacific Ocean in international waters.

Yep,
the first of those sea bottom discoveries were manganese nodules, not a rare earth, several decades ago.

And as to Afghanistan , lithium could be one reason other than poppies that we stay there
