Another reason why I love Linux over Windows

I have two rather old computers, and one of them has a better hardware setup than the other. I decided to take the box with the better hardware and give it to the kids for their games.

The old kids' box dual booted Vista and Linux Mint

After I completed swapping hard drive around, both computers Windows install freaked out, and refused to boot past the safe mode screen. I was planning on reinstalling windows anyway.

The kids linux side? downloaded a few extra patches, adjusted itself to the new onboard video, and pressed on. The kids were back to playing their favorite linux games like nothing had happened!

Seems that Linux is much more able to handle a sudden change in environment.

That's one reason why I kept my physical copy cd of XP and when I install I never update.

I used to dual boot a lot on computers while learning Linux but now don't use it at all, except that I do have a game machine that is dual booted with XP and a Linux distro.

When Windows is installed it take the vendor id of 10 devices, from the mobo to the peripherals and creates a 52 byte HEX GUID (IIRC) that is forever your installation's ID number. If more than three of them change the Windows installation is considered a pirated copy and it is throttled because the generated GUID does not match 70% or better the stored GUID.
