    Re: I finally had enough of FireFox...

    OT but possibly interesting - I have a floppy disk at home with a copy of Netscape 1.1 for Mac, which I installed many times when I was sysadmin on a Novell network with all Mac workstations. Yes, it fit on one floppy.

    8)

    I'm sure that floppy is NFG but it's still cool. I should display it next to my 8-inch floppy disk

      Re: I finally had enough of FireFox...

      definitely OT.
      When Netscape had grown from one diskette to ~16M, there was still an up-to-date browser which fit on one diskette. That was Opera. :P

        Re: I finally had enough of FireFox...

        I haven't used chrome for a while. FF4 is shaping up to be pretty quick.

        Rekonq is an interesting concept too - very quick.

        One interesting point I have found is that attempting to do my online banking (NatWest) with konqueror I get the "unsupported browser" message whereas with rekonq (which I assume is based on Konqueror) I'm straight in! Wonder why?

        For me the biggest thing that lets rekonq down though is bookmark import - it will only import the default FF ones.

          For all you speed freaks -- there is still an interesting little browser in your repository, if not already on your system: lynx.

          THERE is true browser speed!

            I used lynx2 for when my xorg went bottoms up - but as xorg.conf is a thing of the past I haven't felt the need recently

            There is always dillo for the hardcore lot out there.

                Just wanna share some tweaks to make your FF faster than google chrome :
                1. Find prefs.js file in mozilla profile folder and make a backup.
                2. Copy and paste the hacks listed below at the BOTTOM of the file.
                3. Save the prefs.js file and restart your browser.
                Code:
                user_pref("network.http.pipelining", true);
                user_pref("network.http.proxy.pipelining", true);
                user_pref("network.http.pipelining.ssl", true);
                user_pref("network.http.pipelining.firstrequest", true);
                user_pref("network.http.pipelining.maxrequests", 8);
                user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 0);
                user_pref("content.interrupt.parsing", false);
                user_pref("content.max.tokenizing.time", 1500000);
                user_pref("content.notify.backoffcount", 15);
                user_pref("content.notify.interval", 500000);
                user_pref("content.switch.threshold", 250000);
                user_pref("content.notify.ontimer", true);
                user_pref("network.dns.disableIPv6", true);
                user_pref("network.dnsCacheEntries", 1000);
                user_pref("network.dnsCacheExpiration", 7200);
                user_pref("network.http.max-connections", 48);
                user_pref("network.http.max-connections-per-server", 24);
                user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy", 16);
                user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 8);
                user_pref("browser.cache.disk.enable", true);
                user_pref("browser.cache.memory.enable", true);
                user_pref("browser.cache.disk.capacity", 76800);
                user_pref("browser.cache.memory.capacity", -1);
                user_pref("ui.submenuDelay", 0);

                  Hi all....

                  There is one thing I don't understand about Chromium. Can anyone point me where the button is to bring up the browsing history, as you would in IE or Opera, so I don't have to keep typing in an address to go somewhere. This is the main reason why I don't use my copy.

                      Hi...

                      I remember this browser from a few years back and just installed it. The only thing I don't like about it so far is that, unless there is an option somewhere to configure this, it doesn't allow automatic cookie handling. For every cookie, you have to choose Y,N, Always or Never.

                        Thank you but is there a way to add a button for it next to the address bar? It doesn't seem very convenient otherwise.

                              I live in Linux but work in Windows and on my work machines have pitched FF for IE8. On the Linux boxes at home I ran chrome-unstable for awhile, found it to be a bit too bleeding edge for me and switched to chromium. Been pretty happy ever since

                              I did have to fire up FF to do my taxes earlier this week but that's more a problem with TurboTax' website than with chromium - since the whole tax thing is java based it probably would have run just fine, but since I was dealing with financials I decided not to change the user agent string in chromium and try to do my taxes. TT supports IE6 and later and FF under Windows and Safari under Mac - no Linux support. Interestingly, last year I think I *did* have to change the user agent string in FF to get TurboTax to play nice but this year the site offered up a link that said "I know the browser's unsupported but please continue anyway" - that link didn't show up when I tried to hit the site with chromium, it just flat wouldn't let me in.

                              I've learned to live with (and actually appreciate) chromium's rather spartan feature set - the only extensions I use are flashblock, adblock and xmarks and the thing just works.
                              I was still using Firefox last tax season, but I ended up doing my taxes in Konqueror. With the user agent string "fixed" over there, H&R Block's free online efile works brilliantly for me, for my Federal return. My state return, I did via the California Tax Board, because they offer the free efiling direct from them, without making you mess with some third-party for-profit company. Woo.

                              Perhaps someone should start a thread, so those of us in the USA can compare efiling notes for this tax season? I'm aiming to file this weekend, as I've got my W-2 from both my current employer and my former employer all ready to go.

                                I am angry at my state. I have been filing my state taxes online for years without a problem using FF in Linux. This year when I went to the site to file, I get a popup that says I have to have Silverlight to use the site. I tried it with mono but I get an error message that says the feature needed is not yet implemented in mono. So I had to open Virtualbox and boot XP to file my taxes. That sucks.
