    Re: HAIKU?

dunno, if you downloaded a zip filed namedhaiku-r1alpha2-iso.zip it should only contain the iso and a text file. Are you downloading from here? maybe try a different mirror, possibly you have a corrupted file? I can't reproduce what you are seeing trying 3 different mirrors.

      Hi...

I don't think it has anything to do with the .iso file but rather how Ark is choosing to see it.

I would have liked have included a snapshot to show you what I'm seeing but this site's somewhat stringent limit on file sizes prevents me from doing so. Is there a way to shrink the size of the .png file?

UPDATE: Unfortunately, it is some issue or peculiarity with Ark. Under Windows, I was able to download and have Windows properly deal with .iso as a single file. However, trying to install it in VirtualBox was another matter. For some reason, it saw but didn't want to use the partition that I had created for it. For what I saw of it, it sort of reminded me of Windows 9x, a very basic GUI. I might play around with it more later but I'm usually one who likes his software to install and run properly with very little, if any, fuss or muss.

      Thanks....

I've never tried it, but would you normally "extract" an iso file? It seems to me that is the wrong way to process it.

Edit: I now see you already got past that part.

It's normally a drag when people upload files directly to a forum anyway. You have to be logged in (and perhaps sign up first) to view them. There are other problems too. The best plan is to use your own server space, and if you don't have that (perhaps even if you do) then use free servers which are set up for the purpose.

I use a combination. For zip files and other binaries, I just make a directory on a server where I rent cheap space (shared hosting) for other purposes. I can either make a link like you see there or just put a file in that directory and give out the direct URL. For pictures to share, I use Photobucket. It's free and there's plenty of space so absolutely perfect for things to post on forums. Like this famous card which some older folks here might recognize:

You may not have any server space, so for binary files try Magaupload. I don't use them myself, but I sometimes get files from others there. They allow files as big as movies, so basically no limit there.

As for shrinking pictures, use the Gimp. Open file -> Image -> Scale Image Whether the file is .png or whatever doesn't matter. The Gimp rocks!

I said, I am not seeing this in both kde 4.5 and 4.6. Ark opens the zip file and shows the 2 files it contains.

              Hi...

Correct. I see the same thing when I first click on the file. Try clicking on the .iso file, you will get a separate window containing a bunch of haiku files.

                Hi Ole...

Yes, I forgot about folks who aren't logged in not being able to see the pictures but I will have to see what the "dawg" can do about shrinking the snapshot in question.

What code did you use to get the ISA card to show up in your post?

                  Re: HAIKU?

You don't click on the .iso file shown in Ark. Just use Ark to 'uncompress' the two files. Then burn the .iso to a CD for use in the VM.

                    Hi...

Ahhhhhhhhh, ok, I see. Thank you.

A little bit different way of going about it but it works.

UPDATE: I finally got it to install and run. Some initial observations...

                    1. The disk partition needs to be more intuitive and automatic. I had to find an entry in the menu to "initialize" the partition in order to proceed.
                    2. There is no sound (and changing settings caused Haiku not to load properly) and I had to change the settings in VirtualBox (to another ethernet device) in order to get an internet connection.
                    3. The desktop GUI, as I mentioned previously, is reminiscent of Windows 9x and the Mac OS's prior to 10. Very basic and boxy.

You can tell some work has gone into it and the splashscreen is pretty but it needs a major graphics overhaul and software compatibility before it can begin to compete with the other distributions.

There is a whole set of forum codes which are nearly universal. In this case I used the IMG and closing /IMG tags, except in square brackets of course. You can also generate them by clicking on the picture (second from left, bottom line) in the BBC tags of your "Post reply" box. Between the tags, you put the URL. If you use Photobucket, then just hoover your cursor over the picture and there are 4 choices automatically generated for you so you can cut and paste it into various situations.

PS: The ISA card is a genuine IBM Asynchronous Communications Adaptor which became available in August of 1981 along with the IBM PC. The single serial port is configurable for RS232 or current loop interface. Most people would know it as the interface to their external modem. It will actually do 9600 baud! To me this is part of the important history which helped develop on-line communications and the historical route for me to get to this forum.
