    Chrome OS

Anyone looked at Chrome OS or more correctly, Chromium?

    I've downloaded Flow from Hexxeh

    http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/

I'm running it from a USB stick and first impressions are that it seems to go like a rocket, and really handy if you just want to browse the web.

Not quite ready to install it yet to dual-boot but would appreciate thoughts from others who have tried it.

    Re: Chrome OS

My personal opinion on the Chrome OS is that it shouldn't be used. That is a PERSONAL opinion, and the reason for it is simple: You can browse the web and...browse the web. Thats pretty much it. Yes, it has a word processor in it, but doesn't google also have "Google Documents" as well? To me, the Chrome OS simply does everything that Google Chrome already does, just a little bit nicer. And concerning web browsing, speed means nothing if it can't handle web pages well. I've tried Chrome before, and since I view lots of different things at once, it crashed and/or ground to a halt so many times I gave up on it. I believe that if you want fast browsing, just install a light-weight browser onto your computer. The Kubuntu is the fastest OS I've ever had[other than Windows XP that isn't connected to the internet, but that does us no good[not to mention I think the Kubuntu is still faster]] and the Rekonq does great for light weight page browsing. If you do a lot of heavy browsing[streaming videos, flash games, etc.] then the Chrome OS really isn't that good.

Personal opinions aside, if you want to duel-boot it[I am not talking from experience]I wouldn't put to much concerning storage capacity towards it, simply because it does not have that many features with it. But if your looking for just simply browsing the web, doing more light-weight stuff. My advice: Go for it. Just don't wipe your other OS out, because then you will be in MAJOR trouble.

Thanks for that. Myself I've never had the issues you describe with the Chrome Browser, but for some reason I always seem to gravitate back to firefox.

Actually I'm looking into it less for me than my daughter.

She has an 18 month old Dell 1545 Laptop running Vista. Its really slow and takes an eternity to load. Apart from iTunes she uses it mainly for the net. She claims to be a fan of windows, and thinks my attitude towards Linux makes me a bit "sad". The funny thing is, if she wants to be on the net quickly, it's not her machine she grabs - it's either my 4 and a half year old dell centrino laptop (630m) running kubuntu 10.10 or my wifes AAo110 running UNR 10.10! That tells its own story I think.

Interestingly using a USB Key with Chrome OS even with my mature laptop I'm on the net in about 15 seconds, which I think is impressive. It has some issues like I cant access my gmail and I don't seem to be able to install extensions which kind of limits the experience somewhat but I'll keep playing.

        Re: Chrome OS

The whole point of Chrome OS is that you will do all your computing on the web. As a matter of fact, the devices Google will be selling with Chrome OS won't have a hard drive, none at all, not even a solid state hard drive. All of your documents, pictures everything will be stored on the web.

Concerning the Windows thing, I'm a fan of it myself. But I'm liking the Kubuntu more and more. Though, if her Internet is sluggish, it could be because of IE. It is a very powerful browser, but it is NOT fast. At all. I've always opted for Opera if I want fast. It is arguably faster then Chrome, and handles things a little better[in my experiences]. Though, like stated, the Chrome OS is used for the Internet, and nothing but the Internet. It could definitely be done that way. And I'm not trying to shoot it down, I'm just one who looks at functionality more the effiency, if that makes sense. If It takes longer to load a webpage, its fine, because at the same time I can be doing one of hundreds of other things that need to be done. Once again, these are more opinion based then absolute fact.
