No, my scanner loves me. It never gets mad. A scanner is just a bright light, no microwave or anything. If you can get it on the glass, it will scan.

So why does a copy machine break? I thought it was just like a scanner and a printer all in one.

A copy machine is like a scanner. Both work the same way. Laying that disk drive on the glass would not break a copy machine either. Now if you try to feed it through the document feeder all bets are off!!

Hard drives aren't that small yet!

I have an old (10 years) HP laptop with <5 minutes battery life but a good 17" monitor. Had to replace the old hard drive a couple of years back but I needed one for my sister at the same time some I bought a three-pack cheaply of 60gb 5400rpm-er's and the power-brick died after 7 years ($25 ebay).

The sound control (physical volume keys) died after my then-3 year old daughter carefully laid an orange slice on the laptop and shut the lid! I cleaned it as best I could but the citric acid took it's toll. I still have sound but I have to keep a small pick wedged on the vol-up key!

After all that - it's not really useful as a laptop anymore but makes a decent semi-portable desktop. I took it along on a two week business trip this year so I could video-skype my daughter and wife and use the internet in my hotel room.

Damn thing is tough as nails... 8)

Yep. Hard to beat HP. My old (6 years) DV1000 still performs flawlessly. Xubuntu 10.04. Everything works out of the box. I take it with me everywhere. When I first got it, I had a little difficulty getting the Broadcom wireless working, but that is no longer an issue. Only mods are an upgrade to 1GB ram. Still using the original battery and AC adapter.

A soldier in Iraq had a problem with his HP 5510 All-in-One. Here is how he settled it.

WOW! Except for the word "Hitatchi" (Mine says IBM) the label is identical, down to the CHS settings. The only strange thing is that with the same CHS settings yours is 20GB and mine is 40GB. Don't know what's up with that.

                  Should work, though!

I've seen that one before. Trooper made a pretty strong statement there!!

                      Re: Electronic Gremlins Attack!

On a slightly more positive note - I inherited a 6 or 7 year old Dell Inspiron 8600 which had had XP on it which had crashed! It's got a 1.6GHz Pentium processor, a Toshiba 37.3 GB HD, 500Mb of memory and on-board Nvidia graphics. I wiped, re-formatted the drive, and partitioned it using GParted, then loaded Linux.

The thing is it's running the latest Maverick, with quite acceptable Desktop effects, KDE 4.5.3. I'm amazed - it's really quite usable (even if a bit slow). So! No Gremlins here ... yet.

Thanks for the 20GB drive! I put it into the Gateway 400SD4 and that puppy ran like Xubuntu was made for it, which it was!

Did you install the other little piece I included? That should have helped it out also.

Sorry, I couldn't. There were only two slots and both were filled with 256MB chips. Thanks anyway. If you want it back I'll mail it!

I thought I read in a previous post that it only had 256. I don't need it. Don't worry about sending it back.
