    Really ODD MS Job announcement

    http://www.microsoft-careers.com/job...Job-SV/864893/

Poorly written, confusing job descriptions using lots of BUZZ words, and referencing FY09 (Fiscal Year 2009) of a job with a 9/18/2010 posting date.

No doubt about the intent, however ...

Initiative Marketing Manager(717317 -External) Job Apply now »

    Date: Sep 18, 2010

    Location: San Salvador, SV
    Job Category: Marketing
    Location: El Salvador, San Salvador
    Job ID: 717317 20409
    Division: Marketing

The CSI Lead owns three core objectives for the Area (and Subsidiaries) as follows:
    • Drive CSI Strategy. The CSI Lead is responsible for providing a 360 degree view of the local compete environment (directly to the Chief Compete Officer and BMO) and ensuring plans are in place to help drive healthy, balanced, and sustained growth. à Ability to win share from competitors and ensure growth faster than the market (Servers, IW, Web, HPC)
Win share from competitors? Which ones? Apple? Oracle?

Be a Perception Change Agent. The CSI Lead needs to understand how Microsoft’s platform is perceived, across a number of key audiences (IT Pros, Government Elites, BDMs, IT Journalists, etc.) à Ability to implement programmatic marketing that will CHANGE THE WAY PEOPLE think about Microsoft, specifically those with a ‘hostile’ or negative perception of the Microsoft platform.
Whom ever the "competitor" is, MS is going to change the way they think about Microsoft, especially those who have hostile/negative views about Windows.

    • Build ‘Compete Muscle’ Across Your Area. The CSI Lead owns ensuring that the region and subs are fully ready to compete against Linux and FOSS. This includes everything from training to being the subject matter expertise, where needed. à Ability to diagnose a market share problem, find root causes and pull together a team that will PLAN / DO / CHECK / ACT in the right direction.
To help the CSI Lead reach these FY09 goals, there are a range of marketing and sales enablement activities that should be selected and executed.
    .....
Ah, the "competitor" is Linux/FOSS! The platform with only a 1% market share! That 1% must be a mighty big market share in such a small, poor country, where the total population is less than the city of New York, half live in San Salvador and the nominal GDP per capita is $3,718. Only the elite would not have to take out a loan on 10% of their annual income just to buy Win7. The wealth distribution (Gini) is 0.52, which is poor.

Here in the US we often hear of how illegal aliens are affecting the health, employment and crime statistics. I was suprised to read how it is affecting small, South American nations like San Salvador.
Remittances from Salvadorans living and working in the United States, sent to family in El Salvador, are a major source of foreign income and offset the substantial trade deficit of $4.12 billion. Remittances have increased steadily in the last decade and reached an all-time high of $3.32 billion in 2006 (an increase of 17% over the previous year).[26] approximately 16.2% of gross domestic product(GDP).

Remittances have had positive and negative effects on El Salvador. In 2005 the number of people living in extreme poverty in El Salvador was 20%,[27] according to a United Nations Development Program report, without remittances the number of Salvadorans living in extreme poverty would rise to 37%. While Salvadoran education levels have gone up, wage expectations have risen faster than either skills or productivity. For example, some Salvadorans are no longer willing to take jobs that pay them less than what they receive monthly from family members abroad. This has led to an influx of Hondurans and Nicaraguans who are willing to work for the prevailing wage. Also, the local propensity for consumption over investment has increased. Money from remittances has also increased prices for certain commodities such as real estate. Many Salvadorans abroad earning much higher wages can afford higher prices for houses in El Salvador than local Salvadorans and thus push up the prices that all Salvadorans must pay.[
Our unwillingness to control out boarders is causing as much trouble there as it is here.

And, Microsoft wants those who are using Linux/FOSS, which is free and immune to infective agents, to switch to an expensive proprietary platform which will also require that they subscribe to AV products and purchase effective firewalls, and even then risk infections by agents for which current, up to date AV vaccines do not recognize because they haven't been isolated and reported to the AV houses for analysis and vaccine creations. Looks like Microsoft is going to put "The Slog" and "The Stacked Panel" to work in San Salvador: How to Get Your Platform Accepted as a Standard - Microsoft Style

South American? Wait a minute, GG, it's a CENTRAL AMERICAN nation just like Costa Rica or Guatemala. Not even Panamá is part of South America. The second thing I'd need to tell you is that their entire population might be almost comparable with that of New York city. Why would I say that? It'd be because of their population growth (and poverty as you already pointed out). That income you mentioned might not be as exact as it looks at first glance because people from El Salvador living in USA send money to their relatives and that means they get up to 4.5 billion a year in remittances from their relatives. There are other ways to increase their incomes but not all of them are legal or morally acceptable... So that statistic might be incorrect. Anyway, US based multinational companies (and possibly also some Canadian ones) have contributed in their economic growth making more dependent of US economy... There are also serious problems there like the Maras, some of the gangs expelled / banned from USA and sometimes even from Mexico, that terrorize (which also means kill and torture) people in Northern Central America...

What I don't understand is why they need to do that in El Salvador or even Costa Rica if they easily fool their governments by making them accept weird and not so good agreements to get MS support, pay software licenses and accept MS only platforms and OS's in many cases (and places)... Even common people are too used to the idea of only using Windows, not many are Linux and FOSS adepts so they'd need to convince that many people of changing their minds and embracing MS as their main (or unique) software ("solutions") provider. Even the current Costarican president spoke in favor of FOSS technologies in the past but changed her mind during her stay in the Costarican congress (assembly or whatever you wanna call it) and nowadays doesn't even dare to support FOSS in any way. Actually 2 or 3 months ago some reporters asked her why she suddenly stopped supporting FOSS and didn't include a software neutrality project in her presidential agenda and why she didn't stress on the need of getting 50 % of all government PC's and networks to work under a free OS or even a FOSS-compatible one or do what the Cubans did with Nova IIRC which is a Cuban version of an already existing GNU/Linux OS deployed by their government. She didn't know how to accurately explain what had happened during the time she was a congresswoman. She actually made excuses of why she couldn't implement such ideas in the government software by saying the technicians should verify if it was viable to introduce GNU/Linux in their networks and let the bureaucrats learn to handle a whole new system and apps, etc.

The Costarican government even opened some cybercafés in some communities so more people could get access to the Internet and guess what, their PC's offered Windows only... If there is any public or private initiative to let people get more computer literate than ever before, they only teach people how to handle common MS apps and OS's... It's weird to see some institution teaching people how to use and work with Apple unless they might also teach anything regarding graphical design and similar stuff.
    Multibooting: Kubuntu Noble 24.04

Opps! My bad. I even noticed that it was in Central America when I looked at the map. It just came out of my typing fingers as SA. Sorry.

The second thing I'd need to tell you is that their entire population might be almost comparable with that of New York city.
I noticed that too, but half of the population lives in El Salvador, the city where Microsoft's CSI will reside, which is where the money is.

        .....
Anyway, US based multinational companies (and possibly also some Canadian ones) have contributed in their economic growth making more dependent of US economy...
I was surprised to learn that they abandon their own Colon and adopted the US Dollar as their currency around 2004.

The drug trade, fueled by Americans unable to control themselves and unconcerned about the deaths they are causing South of our border, and politicians unwilling to do anything about it for personal political reasons, are creating zones in the border regions of our Southern states where our own US State Department has warned Americans to stay out of, because of the danger from drug gangs! The idea the Americans have to stay out of regions of their own state or country because Washington doesn't want to do anything significant about it is outrageous! It is one of the many facts that is fueling voter rage against both parties and just about all incumbent politicians.

What I don't understand is why they need to do that in El Salvador or even Costa Rica ..... not many are Linux and FOSS adepts so they'd need to convince that many people of changing their minds and embracing MS as their main (or unique) software ("solutions") provider.
People everywhere understand injustice, especially when they realize they are the targets of it. Just as I did when I realized what Microsoft was doing as an illegal monopoly, and what they've blatantly continued to do, as demonstrated by the combs-3096.pdf document, or their skullduggery in the ISO fisasco, or many of the other examples I've written about. MS sees the need to do PR spin to change the people's "perception" of their experience using Windows ... the continuing lack of security, the constant upgrade treadmill $$$, etc., compared to their Linux experience, and Microsoft's corporate political and economic actions. The PR campaign will fail, and they know it, so they resort to what you write about below ...

Even the current Costarican president spoke in favor of FOSS technologies in the past but changed her mind during her stay in the Costarican congress (assembly or whatever you wanna call it) and nowadays doesn't even dare to support FOSS in any way.
        ...
The key member of the European Union's committee on FOSS in the EU was a "staunch" FOSS supporter until Steve Ballmer took her out to dinner on evening. She switched her POV after that meeting. Ballmer isn't that handsome that he could swoon some gal into changing a political view point. It reminds me of the the ISO chairman who forced his committee to vote for OOXML and afterwords accepted a job from Microsoft. The ISO debacle is a stunner:
        here
        here
        here
        just to list a few...

The Costarican government even opened some cybercafés in some communities so more people could get access to the Internet and guess what, their PC's offered Windows only...
        ....
They were paid for by a $50M deal with Sam Pitroda, chairman of WorldTel. Pitroda has strong ties to Microsoft, as witnessed by his "co-sponsorship" of a Microsoft sponsored event in which Microsoft is the recipient of the honors. So, it's no wonder they forced Windows onto the cybercafe owners.

Not sure, maybe it is legit. It just doesn't seem right.

Edit: I followed the trail back to msft.net, it does indeed look like it belongs to Microsoft. There are slight differences in the registration, but you are right they are using Microsoft name servers.

It looks like their web server runs IIS 6 on Windows 2003, and is hosted at Rackspace in Dallas which which would be unusual for a Microsoft owned web server which are normally hosted on their MSN network. It could be rogue, it could be legit, or it could be a fraud. It's hard to tell so I won't speculate, it is not impossible to poison DNS so I won't say with 100% certainty that it is legit.

              Doesn't to me, either.

The fact that it doesn't come off of the site you mentioned but definitely IS an MS website, suggest to me that it was hastily created for the benefit of a few, if not just one person. The "FY09" reference suggests that it was recycled and not very well proof read. Perhaps the previously hired CSI didn't work out and they want to get another one secretly lined up before they drop the hammer on the current one, except that some sharp eye noticed and let the cat out of the bag.

Could be. Microsoft has always come up with interesting ways to try to undermine competition.

That's true but common people kind of regret it... Salary raises aren't as common or as good as they were before, some people say and others criticize inflation but I guess almost everybody does nowadays.

and, it is only registered for a year.

Professionally, it was very poorly done, which suggested to me that it was fake. But, unless hackers have hijacked the DNS servers the site belongs to Microsoft.

And that site is pointed to by another Microsoft jobs related website.
                    Odd site indeed.
Well actually that just means that Microsoft is hosting the site. If you look at the whois for http://patscomputerservices.com (my site on "OfficeLive"), it has essentially the same WHOIS registration and is registered through the same Melbourne, Australia company. But it's obviously NOT a Microsoft site (and when I find a decent webhost that's not $80.00/month up front, it won't be on their servers anymore either).

Plus as for the Linux/FOSS portion, in other countries, FOSS has a higher market share than here. So, while overall it may only be 1%, in some countries it's probably 90% of their population.

                    Have a great day
                    Patrick.
