Build a $200 Linux powered computer

    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2366841,00.asp

    Motherboard: Foxconn A6GMV ($39.99).
    CPU: 2.9-GHz AMD Athlon II X2 245 ($58.99)
    Memory: 1GB Crucial CT12864BA1339 ($24.99)
    Hard Drive: 160GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3160318AS ($38.99)
Case and Power Supply: Rosewill R424BK with 350-watt PSU ($29.99)
    Operating System: Kubuntu 10.4 LTS
    Our final total: $192.95

Keeping to our budget meant leaving out two potentially crucial components: a video card and an optical drive.
They used the integrated video chip and a USB stick in place of a DVD or CDROM.

I'm going to build a cheap one. For my son. I can do it with all of the spare parts I have lying around. Only thing I have to buy will be a MB, Processor, and It will have a Video card. I already have cases, power supplies, keyboards, mouse, monitor, etc. I may even have a DVD. I'll need a sata hard drive. Lot's of old IDE drives around but no sata. If I wanted to build a cheap machine to use as a file and print server, I could do it even cheaper.

Nice setup. Spend roughly $50 extra bucks and the pc should be complete. Still, being under $500 dollars is good enough for me.

In Costa Rica you get a modern but basic PC for at least $600, try to improve it and it'll be some $800 to $1000. Laptops are always more expensive...

Why are they so expensive there?
          Freight? Tariffs? Taxes?

Because of Freight, Tariffs, Taxes, MS and sometimes more RAM, a newer video card, the monitor if bigger than 19'', vendors who profit on desperate people who don't know where else to go and get a real PC, not a second hand one or a refactioned(?) one...
