Hot to spot a planted story!

Amid Apple's release of iPad and stories of the vulnerabilities of Win7 holding back its uptake by XP users we have this story disputing reports of Microsoft's coming demise.

How do I know it is a plant? It quotes Laura Dideo, the perpetual Linux hating, pro MS cheer leader.

"Reports of Microsoft's impending demise are not only greatly exaggerated but certainly far from the truth," said Laura DiDio, principal analyst at ITIC. "Microsoft has a perception problem, but in reality, it does a lot of things very well."
She's the former Yankee Group and Giga "analyst" who narrated Windows server sales video for Microsoft, and who appears to rewrite MS PR memos as if she created them. She's started her own "research" business and although she has a 2nd "principal researcher" you cannot find that person's work anywhere on Didio's website. So she is essentially a one person show.

She is right out of James Plamondon's "The Slog", folks. Plamondon is the fellow Microsoft hired to lead a bunch of digital terrorists given the euphemistic name "Technical Evangelists". In the Comes vs Microsoft document, combs-3096.pdf, he states this:
“Working behind the scenes to orchestrate “independent” praise of our technology, and damnation of the enemy’s, is a key evangelism function during the Slog. “Independent” analyst’s report should be issued, praising your technology and damning the competitors (or ignoring them). “Independent” consultants should write columns and articles, give conference presentations and moderate stacked panels, all on our behalf (and setting them up as experts in the new technology, available for just $200/hour). “Independent” academic sources should be cultivated and quoted (and research money granted). “Independent” courseware providers should start profiting from their early involvement in our technology. ...”
Plamondon could have easily been describing Didio, classic example of which is described in GrokLaw. You can follow Didio's history of reporting on the SCO/Linux affair using Google. You'll see what I mean.

Apparently Microsoft needed someone to remind folks that they still have lots of money, so they are relevant, despite the fact that they are continuing to lose market share and even DELL has stated that "6) Ubuntu is safer than Microsoft® Windows®". The page is difficult to find from the home page, so while Dell is throwing a bone to Linux users that page is difficult to identify from the home page. (Go to the laptops page and go down to just above the video clip along the left border.)
"A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.”
    – John F. Kennedy, February 26, 1962.

So many planted stories on the news media nowadays. We really can't believe everything we read/hear. That's why I think forums are nice, since there are many opinions and people are free to express themselves and dissect the news, it's much more reliable and easy to spot fanboys and ramblers. However, depending on the forum the objectivity might be compromised.

    Thanks for the post GreyGeek
