Holy crap Batman! Are you booting Kubuntu from that SSD? What do you do with 8GB of RAM -- I guess you could run 6 or 8 VMs on that at the same time?

Well, the SSD was for experimenting with. Got it on sale. With the right format and a few tweaks I can get buffered disk reads up to 220mbs - about the same as RAID5 on 4 devices. RAID0 approaches 400 mbs. Issues like degrading performance over time (ms not hrs) and slowing down as it fills up are apparent also. I used it in my media computer for a while but replaced it with a bootable CFII card instead. Now it's just for playing with. I may install Win7 Ultimate on it next. I launch Kubuntu from a four disk RAID0 that clocks at:

Timing cached reads: 7962 MB in 2.00 seconds = 3983.83 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 1076 MB in 3.00 seconds = 358.46 MB/sec

The latest "affordable" SSD's are 50gb at 270mbs advertised (it will be much faster) are about $180us. Four of those in a RAID0 would SCREAM!

As far as the RAM: I do a bit of video processing. I can rip a dvd and transcode two others at the same time while running FF, Tbird and OO before it all fills up!
