    swap file on SD memory

    Hello to everybody.
Well my question looks stupid but your answer will help me realizing how to handle right SD memoriy cards.
I am doing a little search before installing kubuntu (netbook edition) in my aspire one. Looking at the original fstab of the netbook I realize that Acer divided the SD card in two partitions and that the second is used as a swap. How is this possible and is it wrong what they say that SD memories can be written limited times? Moreover what type of file-system shall I use for my partitions?

The advertisements claim UP TO one million writes. To me, this implies that the real number will be substantially less than that, and you will probably write to the card more often than you think, if it is used as a swap partition on a machine without a lot of memory capacity.

Note that on machines with a lot of memory, the current recommendation is to use no swap partition at all. However, that advice assumes a large amount of RAM compared to the memory requirements of the apps that you're running, so don't try to run six or eight apps at once.

      Of course
I have 1GB ram. The swap most probably is going away! This will be done by the end of the week. If anybody has objections please post.
      Thanks for your reply askrieger.

Re: swap file on SD memory

Won't a swap partition (or something akin to it such as a swap file) be necessary to hibernate the machine? You can dissuade the system from excessively using swap in normal use by configuring the "swappiness" although Askriegers comments about not having too many applications open make perfect sense.

There are other things you can do, to eliminate unnecessary writes to the cards. I found some useful help here

        Hope this helps

Liquidator is correct -- no swap = no suspend to disk.

Oough, I haven't thought about suspending. Many thanks for the link also dibl.
