    Hey Vinny

I always install it from the Ubuntu repos, any reason to install it manually from their webpage?

    Thanks!

Vinny's talking about the Live CD download. Until they fix the bug, you want to stick with 0.4.6-1 or older. That is, if you work with NTFS. (In which case, I'd check the version offered through the repos, too; although that usually tends to be a step or two behind anyway, I think).

          Re: Gparted & NTFS

the curent ver in the repo as I show it in Karmic is

          Gparted-0.4.5-2ubuntu1

so I gess it's still good as well.

I do tend to be a little vague some times and ya I was telling about it for those using the live cd to do thare partitioning work....I seame to allwase prepartition my drives even if I know the instaler is going to want to think it did it all as well.

and a old gparted disk.....(it may be time to reburn that one)....has never let me down.

I do still have a 2 floopy set for partition magick some ware to but.......that was then........
now I have a partition magick .ISO some ware but havent botherd burning it yet to try it :P

          eneyway now I'm rambaling

It's fun to ramble about GParted--it's a great program!
(As is the one dibl is using now, the spin-off, which I haven't had time to try. GParted does the jobs I need done, and it has a Terminal in its session, so that comes in handy, too.)

Yep, I really like the Parted Magic Live CD. Matter of fact, I made a Parted Magic bootable USB stick, so I have it for netbooks and such that don't have an optical drive. The entire Parted Magic suite runs in memory, so you can eject the CD or USB stick as soon as it has loaded up. Among other cool features is a graphical SMART test package, so you can boot it and start a hard drive test (like let it run overnight) and stuff like that.

                Re: Gparted & NTFS

Thanks for reminding me again, dibl! Parted Magic is getting rave reviews by its users and does sound like an excellent choice that provides many other services in addition to basic partitioning.
I guess I'm a creature of habit and have stayed with GParted Live CD. I think both programs have the same gparted library (or whatever it's called), right? So, for example, in particular, Parted Magic is GPT aware?

A quick cruise through the Parted Magic documentation and recent release notes did not turn up "GPT" or "GUID" -- so I'm not sure whether that means "no problemo" or "never heard of it".

How would you test it? I guess you need a hard drive larger than 2T? Because I have a 1.5T drive that I partitioned with Parted Magic, and saw no issues.

                    Re: Gparted & NTFS

You could fire up the CD, and check to see what types of NEW partition tables it offers (as if you put in a fresh flash drive that was zeroed out).
In GParted, it is Device > New Partition Table, and you get MSDOS by default; or you can click the arrow for choices, including GPT.

Yep, OK, did that. It offers the MSDOS partition table as default, but under the "Advanced" drop-down menu are GPT, MAC, SUN, etc. -- 6 or 8 additional types.

Until fsck.ntfs or something similar is ready for use, we still need from time to time Windows.

                          @dibl -- good!

@josefko -- now, why specifically do we need Windows?

I think it is useful to do some disk check from time to time. I have an external disk with NTFS, I use it on Windows and on Kubuntu and it is not clean every time when I run chkdsk in Windows, because Linux equivalent fsck.ntfs is under preparation.

I can answer why you might need to run Windows ... if you want to run this or this, for example, there is no equivalent package for Linux. I'm sure there are numerous "one of a kind" applications for Windows, for which an equivalent is not available for Linux.

But, you don't need to have Windows installed on your hard drive -- Win XP and Win 7, in my experience, run perfectly on a virtual machine (VM) within Linux. (I never heard anything about Vista that made me want to try it.) So, you can run Windows on a VM, and skip the viruses and malware -- I never browse or e-mail from Windows, I only use it to take care of stuff that I literally cannot do in Linux (yet).
