Re: What was the first linux disro you ever used

Freespire was the first Linux distro I used and installed. It was great, everything worked out of the box. Sadly when Linspire got bought by Xandros they pretty much dumped Freespire In fact their communication with the Freespire community was horribly lacking.

My first personal machine was a Timex Sinclair!!! 4k ram with a 16k upgrade. The OS was loaded by cassette tape!!!

After that - an Apple IIc, although I had used Apple IIe's and TRS80's at college (this was 1982) and card punched programs for an IBM360 mainframe in high school before that... Fortran IV... what memories!!!

Yea, I wanted an Amiga in a bad way too.

I dont understand why people are afraid of linux. this is not a thread hijacking attempt either.

If you want to discuss that, start a new thread.

Kubuntu Daffy Duck, er... Dapper Drake. When I decided to build a new computer and try out Linux four years ago, I think I settled on *buntu because of its reputation for user-friendliness, and I liked the look of KDE better than Gnome. I've looked at other distros but have stuck with Kubuntu ever since, largely because of this forum.

Hm, Suse 7.something I think. In around 2003 maybe on a 1997 Compaq desktop with a 14.4 modem. The PC is still in regular use, though running Kubuntu 9.10 just now. It's a bit slow, but does for the children's homework and Facebooking.

Re: What was the first linux disro you ever used

Have no idea, oh, used. That'd be 6.06.

I don't think about it much, but I (sort of) remember (high school) '70, a SR-33(?) terminal, with connect to Honeywell timeshare? Then '71, same to Digital timeshare. Dropped out in '73.

              Then about late '91, a C-64, Trash-80, and 1st IBM/compat 386SX16MHz (8-1mB RAM/80mB-HD, ooh, an 5.25" floppy) '92 or '93. After a mem upgrade to 32MB (8-4MB chips) wow, remember having 8 slots for memory? It hasn't stopped since.....though switched to laptop(s) in '03.

There was a linux I attempted and didn't find time to "get it". It was before '95. I'd boot lilo from floppy. Option was there to install lilo to mbr. Didn't, had M$win3.1/M$"DOS"6 (or was it just DR-DOS incognito?) Took forever to download. Was it on 20+ of the old .... 3.5 floppies. Were they 1.44 mB? Or 720? Or was 720 the 5.25"? I gave all that stuff away....

              Guess its not......(BF)

Oh - yeah. I remember it happened. Just, specifics not clearly.

I gotta leave this alone. But, neat to read everyones responses..... more, more ..

And sorry about that, the question was answered with dapper 6.06.

Re: What was the first linux disro you ever used

The first distro I ever had the pleasure to use was Knoppix as a recovery livecd. At the time I was running Windows XP, until one day i nasty message came across the screen and everything faded to BLUE. Lucky for me my father in law is a computer expert and gave my Knoppix to see if we could figure out what the problem was or at least make it possible for me to use my computer while we were trying to figure it out. We manage to fix they system and recover all of my lost data right before switching everything over to Linux for I wouldn't have to worry about the Blue Screen of Death haunting my PC.

SuSE 7.0 ... used it solid (properly as my main OS) for 6 months.
