Re: What was the first linux disro you ever used

Still have my first computer...Commodore! It has issues so it is put up. I do miss it, though they do have VICE now and it is really great that it emulates so close to the real thing. Just been trying to find a way to connect the 1581 to get my 5.25 floppies to VICE format. I'd love to see some of my original BASIC programs running again. Truly, my first clone system was an ACER 386SX. Man, I had fun with that machine. Took that thing apart so many times and upgraded it finally to the hilt! It lasted nearly 7 years. ACER. Who'd have thought they'd still be around after all this time. So many others have died away.

Caldera or Slackware. Can't remember. They were a 5 cd set that came in one of those "butterfly" cd cases.

My first computer was a KIM , a single board computer, known back then(Anyone here use it?).

KIM was built by MOS, who owned the 6502 cpu chip. It was the predecessor to Commodore VIC-20.

After the KIM, then Rockwell AIM-65. It had "sun burst" led display. I build a video interface based on the "SAM" chip, used in Radio shack "CoCo" computer, that used 6509 cpu and running OS9. That's where I came across the KISSable 09. (KeepItSimpleStupid).

I had lots of fun back then building things, and the CoCo club was the most fun. I still have a poster framed from a 1987 Rainbow Fest.

Apple II came next then I moved on to the Amiga 500... eventually started building and selling my own PC's.

My first linux was Suse, not sure which one about the time novell took over I think. I stayed with Mepis after installing many distros. Eventually my gaming and lust for exotic hardware pulled me back to windows but now games nore me and i have no money for hardware so kubuntu is my new home.

My first computer was a vic-20, moved to a C=64 Helped run a C=64 Based BBS

My first experiance with Linux was RH 5.2 was that 1997? that i bought at wal-mart. I had no clue what I was doing and obliterated the file system on my mother in laws computer. gparted would have been nice to have back then.

played with live cd's Knopix and DSL. around 2003 I installed Debian 3.0 first experience with gnome, hated it, as soon as I could i installed KDE. went back to ms for a while. I installed kubuntu 7.04 as a dual boot and by 7.10 it was the sole OS on my computer. I had to deal with my wife not wanting to change so she still runs M$ on her computer. I still love her though.

Yeah, my wife still insists on M$. Mainly for her iPOD then anything else. I had her use Kubuntu for a while, but it was on a crap pience of hardware I bought from Dell. Inspiron 1000. SLOWWWWWW machine. My daughter use kubuntu for a long while, but started playing an online game that only ran with M$, so now she's back to that . I'm still Kubuntu! Hope they survive! If not, back to Debian.

IIRC the iPod worked on Kubuntu 9.04 when I tested it. I dunno about DRM encumbered music though.

I skipped the VIC-20 and went straight for the C-64. It seemed such an amazingly powerful box at the time, but now I think of it as a great Frogger player. :-X

By means best left undescribed, I got my hands on a set of SCO Unix 386 back about 1992, and installed it on a 486/33 box, to learn more about Unix. I had a lot of fun and learned to cope with the CLI. I would call that my first "Linux-like" system -- very eye-opening and educational.

I (not so fondly) remember installing and configuring Xenix 2.0 in 1986/1987.

My first personal computer was an Apple ][+, serial # 1276 (IIRC), bought in the fall of 1978. To complete a useful setup I needed an rf to NTC video converter, A color TV, and a cassette tape recorder for storing programs and data. Later I swapped out the cassette for two DISK ]['s, a 64KB memory card, and a Panasonic impact printer. I also started writing financial software for the Apple (this was before VisiCalc), and selling them on weekends to supplement my teaching income. My first Apple sale as a 64KB Apple ][+ with two Disk ]['s, a monitor and a 749 Centronics line printer. TTotal sale: $5,000. Profit was 50%. I got half the profit, or $1,250. My monthly take home from teaching was $700, and I was the highest paid teacher in the school district.

Two years later I sold the Apple for more than I bought it for, and used the money to buy an IBM PC with 512Kb of RAM, 10MB HD, a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

I started on Linspire. Heard about this new Linux thing, did a web search and came across an "easy to use" distro called Linspire. I installed it and was hooked on Linux. The click and run thing never really worked and the distro was just about dead, so it was not the best introduction. Switched over to Kubuntu and been here since.

Check out all the Commodore and Amiga guys. I had a 64, but could not afford an A500 when I wanted one. Think people who had something other than a M$ machine in the past keeps us open to other alternatives?
