    Possible security issue

Check to see if you have a problem, especially if you have wine installed.

    Re: Possible security issue

I read the article and checked for the vulnerability on my laptop:

    Code:
    me$ cat /proc/sys/vm/mmap_min_addr
    me$ 0
Yup, it's there for me. Since I just installed wine on here this morning, I checked to see if changing the value as suggested prevented wine from working properly. It had no effect.

I am running karmic on my laptop. So this might be there for others as well. I don't really know what security problems this opens up. Thanks for the link Detonate.

Mine was OK. But if you set a non-zero value, you have to reset it after each re-boot; or follow the special instructions to make the fix permanent.

According to what I read, if it is set to Zero, it opens a possibility for a non-root privileged user to gain root rivileges.

reports that Ubuntu sets this value to 65535 which means there is no problem if you run Kubuntu.

But if you install wine, it seems to change it.

There is some earlier discussion on this issue here:

I missed that thread, or I would not have double posted.

I would not even know had you not posted. Oh well.
