    Re: VMWare Player 3.0 announced

Running Karmic. Copied the VM folder off of my Ubuntu 9.04 /home/paul partition. VMware runs, no problem. The existing VMware Tools that were previously installed in the VM work just fine. But as I'm running VMware Player 3.0 in Karmic, and after installing the Player and starting it, was told that an update to Tools was available, I decided that it would be nice to have the updated Tools. So that's where I'm at.

That should work - I dunno what the problem is with the tools update.

FYI, when copying a VM for a new installation, I just copy the big .vmdk file, and a "clean" .vmx for whatever OS is on the VM. When you first run it, it will generate the other files. But I don't think that difference is relevant to the password prompt problem that you are having.
