    Re: Ubuntu forums vs kubuntuforums

    Linux or Windows server?
It is what it is, and it is what Open Source uses for it at the moment--his decision--and as long as it works, so be it. (Yes, imo, fwiw, the "idea" of Linux servers is nice.)

A monthly user fee to post/use the forum?
    What a ridiculous idea.
(Note that I didn't say those who advocate such are ridiculous.)
I've never heard of that, sorta of flies in the face of the spirit of Linux, doesn't it? Not a very friendly, welcoming message, especially to new users. Oh, let the Windows advocates get a hold of that!--"Kubuntu forums charges a fee to play." This is not a question of affording it or not, as it would require such a small PayPal/MasterCard debit from each person to meet expenses (based on membership = 34000; that's $34000 per $1 USD membership fee). Money is not the point.

    Advertising?
Holy cow! Why not?! This is a free economy, and in most economies (like USA), money makes the wheels go around and advertising (in its many forms, including its softer forms like public relations) is the way to get the money. This is real simple folks. If the money is going for a good purpose, who cares about an occasional ad here and there @ Kubuntu? Geez, get real, grow up, for goodness sakes.

    Donations?
Well, again, geez, send it! Now. Those of you who keep flaunting about having the money and wanting to share it this way, send your money now to OS as a donation to this forum. Just do it! (TM--Nike). Why are you hesitating? (Do you also need recognition? I suppose you'd want OS to post a list of Top Donors (The Gold Club, The Silver Club, The Copper Club perhaps?) or something like that? If you really want to give, then give, even anonymously. No strings attached to donations. Going the other way, no obligations to the donors, no guarantees about anything. Everything purely voluntary, both ways, from the source to the use of the money.

    So, imo,
apologies to the decision theorists who'd like to make this complicated, but this is fairly simple:
    OS -- Advertise.
Users who say they want to help -- Send donations when you have the extra cash. Like right now, today.

      Re: Ubuntu forums vs kubuntuforums

i prefer the kubuntu forums. it just seams like the right place for me to post my kubuntu related stuff, besides over on ubuntu fourm there all pro mono and thats just not right :P

i have a few forums(not just linux related) i frequent, but of them all i find the ppl here are the best knowledgeable and always willing to help, unlike some forums were all you get is RTFM from people...., sometimes it quicker to just ask a question, try to find half of the stuff here in the kubuntu user manual, it just seams to be missing a lot or based still on kde3. (i need an example right?). speaking of the user manual (or help section) it does have some good info nevertheless

I certainly wouldn't have any problems with that.

Some other Forums i use have adverts (Linux Mint is one of them), and -- to retain my integrity, i disable Adblock Plus and NoScript when visiting them. 8)

Go for it if you wish to OS, you won't get rid of me that easy.

          Re: Ubuntu forums vs kubuntuforums

Speaking only for myself, I'd be happy to send my contributions (in what ever amount I am comfortable with) to Open Source, and have told him so. But, so far, he has declined to accept such monetary support of the forum form those who happily use it.

I like an ad-free site. But having advertisers help defray ones cost of hosting/maintaining a site isn't a bad thing, and another 'option' that I believe Open Source has concidered.

            Re: Ubuntu forums vs kubuntuforums

I have nothing against Ubuntu forums and post there once in a while. The trouble is that even with well formed questions, you rarely get a response. You will see thread after thread there with two or three posts - all by the OP. The place is just too big.

Now here is a different story. It's just the right size, people answer your questions. I think I'll hang around. Besides, even being new here, I can sense some community.

Regarding MS-Windows servers, ads, and money:
I really don't care about the servers and I'm sure there are no MS-Windows users that do either. This forum isn't about the servers. Of course I think Linux servers are the best, but you go with what you got. My gripe with MS-Win is with the ethics of the company and not with their software - regardless of the quality thereof. Though I must admit that at the price, I'd expect it to be 100% perfect and bug free, but that's another story.
I hate ads, but that's the world we live in. If that's the only realistic choice then so be it. As someone else has mentioned, Linux Mint has ads. I find it quite acceptable on their site - besides they're relevant companies.
Paying money? Well, I'm not far ahead of the food bill and the occasional water pump replacement - I don't even make enough to qualify for a credit card although I am older (pension) and own a big house. There is a wide range of incomes in this country and even wider in some others and I'm not sure that it is wise to limit membership along those lines. /2¢

i think a few ads would be just fine on the forum. if a certian someone would take my $'s i would gladly donate to keep this place up.

                Re: Ubuntu forums vs kubuntuforums

I prefer the Kubuntu Forum over Ubuntu. The somewhat complicated search function on Ubuntu rarely gets what I am looking for.

The members on Kubuntu are never rude to me and almost always help me in some way. I have now been running on Kubuntu since Hardy and never looked back.

I try to help out when I can, but I am still a bit green. If I pass on what I do know, then we can get more Linux and KDE users.

I also like it when I recognize the names of the people posting, I makes me feel at home here.

                Thanks for all the help.
