Re: Ubuntu forums vs kubuntuforums
Linux or Windows server?
It is what it is, and it is what Open Source uses for it at the moment--his decision--and as long as it works, so be it. (Yes, imo, fwiw, the "idea" of Linux servers is nice.)
A monthly user fee to post/use the forum?
What a ridiculous idea.
(Note that I didn't say those who advocate such are ridiculous.)
I've never heard of that, sorta of flies in the face of the spirit of Linux, doesn't it? Not a very friendly, welcoming message, especially to new users. Oh, let the Windows advocates get a hold of that!--"Kubuntu forums charges a fee to play." This is not a question of affording it or not, as it would require such a small PayPal/MasterCard debit from each person to meet expenses (based on membership = 34000; that's $34000 per $1 USD membership fee). Money is not the point.
Advertising?
Holy cow! Why not?! This is a free economy, and in most economies (like USA), money makes the wheels go around and advertising (in its many forms, including its softer forms like public relations) is the way to get the money. This is real simple folks. If the money is going for a good purpose, who cares about an occasional ad here and there @ Kubuntu? Geez, get real, grow up, for goodness sakes.
Donations?
Well, again, geez, send it! Now. Those of you who keep flaunting about having the money and wanting to share it this way, send your money now to OS as a donation to this forum. Just do it! (TM--Nike). Why are you hesitating? (Do you also need recognition? I suppose you'd want OS to post a list of Top Donors (The Gold Club, The Silver Club, The Copper Club perhaps?) or something like that? If you really want to give, then give, even anonymously. No strings attached to donations. Going the other way, no obligations to the donors, no guarantees about anything. Everything purely voluntary, both ways, from the source to the use of the money.
So, imo,
apologies to the decision theorists who'd like to make this complicated, but this is fairly simple:
OS -- Advertise.
Users who say they want to help -- Send donations when you have the extra cash. Like right now, today.
