    Kubuntu logo

    Hi everyone!
Why kubuntu start button have kde symbol instead of kubuntu logo?http://www.kde-look.org/content/show...?content=92234

    Few picks:
    Hi people,

I did a new start-here-kde icon for kubuntu, actually it's the same icon from
kde4 and I changed the logo:
    http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=92234

With the same icon I did a new Ksplash screen, again I only changed the kde
icon for the new kubuntu icon:
    http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=105737

It just gives a little touch buntu to Kubuntu.

I hope you like it for kubuntu.

    Bye.

I really like this icon. Nice work Fransisco!

I think we should go with this for karmic. If nothing else, we could
try it during our alpha releases.

One concern I have is cross branding. Fransisco, could you create a
kicker icon of just the "circle of gears"?

    Thoughts?

I thought that the guys at UDS discussed branding and we do not want to change
    the upstream look?

    Kenneth Wimer

Right, the policy is to stay as close to upstream as possible with
just enough changes to create a slight noticeable difference without
diluting upstream branding. The menu icon is the major point of
upstream branding - it is in our interest as a community which relies
heavily on upstream to keep it. In some ways it represents Kubuntu as
    a reference implementation of KDE.

Since this is a combination of Kubuntu and KDE's logo it would probably cause
brand pollution. Depending on how you want to see it, it either conflicts with
Kubuntu's or KDE's branding. Using the latter as POV, KDE will probably want
to beat us up if we use this as official start-here-kde icon

Other than that it looks really good though.

Our focus at UDS was on the look, feel, and experience when using the
system. We've had a little more Kubuntu specific branding on login in the
past. I think if we got something there was consensus was really good, I
don't think it'd be terribly controversial.

The reason, which is stated in the big box of quoted conversation, is that as the kubuntu project depends upon the awesome work of the KDE project, so we want to leave in the very clear and easy to understand branding of the KDE project, so that more people are left aware of the KDE project as the separate entity it is and how it's contributions drive and complement the hard work of the kubuntu project.

It comes down to respect for those who we are benefiting from the hard work of.

I can certainly understand that, but do we want to show respect at the expense of ourselves? The completely non-branded Kubuntu looks like stock KDE4 was just dropped on top of Ubuntu, almost as an afterthought, rather than tightly integrated into the Kubuntu Desktop OS, which it actually is. I don't feel that it's at all disrespectful to replace the stock menu button with the Kubuntu logo. If you want to keep it in Ksplash, that's fine, because that's more emblematic of KDE actually launching.

              Re: Kubuntu logo

I think that having multiple brandings would be confusing. When they boot their desktop, is it KDE, or Kubuntu, or something else?

Having a Ksplash logo pop up with the KDE logo, then booting into "Kubuntu" would look both unprofessional, and confusing.

I'd say put the Kubuntu logo first (Grub/Ksplash), and the KDE logo on the desktop. To put them in their proper places, where Kubuntu uses the KDE desktop.
              The answers are out there...

Maybe can we open a bug?
So we can have kubuntu logo in kubuntu 9.10?
                What do you think?

Perhaps not a software bug, but perhaps a bug with the philosophy. Ubuntu Bug #1 opened the door for bug reports to be filed on philosophical grounds.

                        Re: Kubuntu logo

There is ongoing discussion on this subject. We are looking at options and working with KDE upstream on this:
                        http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2009/06/b...-together.html
                        http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2009/06/b...-adendums.html
                        http://pinheiro-kde.blogspot.com/200...ing-brand.html

As you can see from the quoted emails above, we aren't in agreement on if we want to 'brand' Kubuntu in some way, or how we would do it.

I personally want something on the desktop that says who we are, but without loosing KDE's identity. Just don't know what would be best. Perhaps something added onto he Kickoff menu, or something along those lines.

you do need to be using kde4.3, it is present in Karmic's kickoff. Not sure if it's present in Jaunty's kde4.3 version
