Being a video editor, I do need the full potential of the video card. Sadly, the new iteration of X-org has gone ATI's way of dropping support for the ATI chipsets of which X300 up to X2200 I believe. That throws in a whole mess of being dependent on the open source drivers. While the open source drivers will provide just the basic functionality, video editing needs more as a lot of the video rendering these days are handled by the GPU. So, I'm not holding any hopes out for Karmic in terms of better support for my X1550 whatsoever unless they use the same x-org that was used in Intrepid. Looks like either I'm forced to upgrade my hardware (I do need to by the way but just not yet ready to do so) or look for another distribution that has the lower x-org working.
The black screen is mainly due to Mr. ATI.
