Nice to meet you!
A little background on a new user:
My name is Brian. I live in the sunshine state of oranges, alligators, old people, and plenty of beaches to go around; Florida. About 6 months ago I got a laptop. This is not my first computer and certainly won't be my last. I started off on Windows 3.1 and have used the latest version of Windows all these years (thanks mom, I enjoyed swiping your copies when you didn't look). I figured out how it Windows works from having problems with it. Then again, most of it was my fault... damn porn addiction!
So anywho, I got this laptop (Gateway P6860FX [nVidia 8800M GTS, 4Gig of ram, Intel multicore processor... oh whatever. I forgot the details) and I was very impressed with how it worked with Vista. I was scared of Vista because of hardware requirements. My wallet isn't that bulky. It worked pretty well with the laptop and didn't have TOO many troubles. Except for the slow down when I keep anything open too long like Firefox, iTunes, a game, anything really... it got annoying. Besides, I disliked how I didn't have control over my OS like I did with XP SP2.
After reading a thread on zeitgeistmovement.com, I got the funky idea of switching to something Linux based. The idea of open source is beautiful and, I feel, its what humans need if we ever want to advance instead of staying in the dark ages. I've thought about it before but after trying to learn some python, I quickly found how confusing it can all be. I heard about Ubuntu though that post. Then I found out about Kubuntu.
I got the live CD and tried it out. Quickly found out that I have a problem with the video drivers. So after a long night (4am!!!) I got all my files I wanted to keep off the HD to a external HD, fixed the video, got the internet working, fought with the external HD and eventually had to mount it like my dog tries to mount anything with legs. I got it all working though!
I never did figure out how to get that xdesktop thing working cause I wanted to see water on my desktop. Figured out how to use compiz... needless to say, I am stoked with Kubuntu!
All the help I really need is found online. I enjoy the terminal very much. I want to learn how to utilize it more. I would like to pick up some sort of language to make make my own program with or edit programs I already have. I have an artistic eye and a trained ear so maybe I can learn how to make this even better? Going to take some time to learn what I need to learn though.
Thank you everyone for helping making this community kick ass! Also thank you for creating Kubuntu!
