    Computers are like Pizzas

So, right now I'm at my boyfriend's house pouting because I really wish I had my own laptop. If you saw the nice little machine my boyfriend owns and was kind enough to leave here for me to play with during the day while he's at work... you might wonder why I'm pouting. He has a pretty nice 17" Apple laptop (forgive me for not knowing exactly which one it is, but it's got a nice metal casing and a 2.6ghz core 2 duo processor, and OS X 10.5.6). I shouldn't be complaining, it's a nice machine, but everything is configured all wrong!

He's got an extension installed on Firefox that completely and absolutely kills the ability to pop links out into their own windows (yet somehow I still get pop up ads for some websites I visit ?!?) so I can't throw my Google Talk chat windows out of my Gmail inbox screen into their own window, Firefox forces them into a new tab. For whatever reason he doesn't like Open Office, and he has two other office suites installed on here... so even though he'd let me install OOo on a previous stay, he had since removed it claiming it was doing things to bother him. But I hate throwing my fiction writing back and forth between office programs as it usually frells up my formatting in small stupid ways that most people wouldn't care about, but bother me a great deal.

These are just some of the reasons why I dislike borrowing someone else's computer, as everything is set up all wrong, but I can't really do anything to fix it because it is not my computer! Then, knowing I am such a nit pick about these things... I'd bought myself a nice little 16GB usb flash drive, to set up a live kubuntu drive on, and when I plugged it in to try to boot to it on his laptop? It didn't go. And when I'd said I was going to try this on his computer over IM, he didn't warn me there I probably had to hit the option key to get to the bootloader screen in order to tell the laptop to boot from the drive! He only mentioned this after I waited through the long ass boot up time back into OS X and came back to Gmail (which of course gave me an error with the chat the first time I logged in). Bah humbug.

So, anyone else want to share their woes on being stuck borrowing someone else's computer, or how they've managed to cope with doing such?

My wife could share a story or two about the weekend she spent working on her thesis on my computer and the horror of a dual-boot gone wrong / my very poor decision regarding grub removal / my not yet knowing the almighty fixmbr command / her not yet knowing that you BACKUP files when working on my computers (or any for that matter) / my not yet knowing that in that situation you don't get all indignant and have a "what the heck were you thinking not backing your thesis up?" attitude / she now has her masters and we are happily expecting our second child!

Oh yeah, and the coping part is she now has her own brand new Vista-infused laptop that I am allowed to get the occasional firefox tab open on!

Vista? Ewww! *scampers off for the cootie removal services that require the removal of the skin layer of her body*

Seriously though, I honestly can not understand why anyone would *want* a computer running Vista. My dad has a new Vista box now, and I set up an account on his computer. However the only reason I have it is he keeps asking me to fix stuff for him. Somehow my pleas of "Dad I stopped using Windows for a reason" fail to parse, so I need an account with admin access so I can go in and do thing without having him hovering over my shoulder. Blah, he still does that anyways unless I go over there to fix it when he's not around.

At work, customers always seem surprised when I tell them that redundancy is their friend. I had a guy last night that came all the way to the back of the store to the printing department to ask about blank CDs and DVDs, which surprised me even though I knew about what he was asking about, then acted surprised when I told him the estimated lifespan on a burned CD or DVD. We actually spent a good ten minutes going back and forth about the best way to translate his old home movies from the VHS they currently resided on to something digital.

Tangentally related, I seem to have figured out why the boyfriend's laptop won't boot from my live drive. Sometimes about the different booting process on macs and how the drives are typically set up for a BIOS system to work with. I will have to further research this next time I have some time to play with my drive from home.

XP (nor linux for that matter) can do switchable graphics as of today. And she has to have a Windows based OS for work. VM/Wine doesn't cut it.

That said, she also *wants* a computer that just works. Try to watch a video on Hulu lately and you'll see what I mean... I put up with some inconvenience for the 'greater good', but for some people it's just not a priority.

yea the mac bios(EFI) is diffrent then a standard pc's bios, on a mac you use key presses (when you turn it on hold the keys) to select boot media, you can use 'C' for cd and 'option' should bring up your boot options
also your usb stick will more then likely have to be formated w/ hfs+ for the mac to want to boot from it. hope that helps...

I haven't had any trouble with Hulu. Especially since upgrading to KDE 4.2, as now Hulu works in Konqueror as well. (Before I had to use Firefox.)

I like Windows Vista actually. Probably because I skipped the whole Windows XP thing, before trying Vista. So from Windows 2000 to Vista, it is a huge difference. Of course, I expected Vista to perform more slowly than Win2k on my system. I have had to upgrade my win2k install to XP, due to a lack of software compatibility.
              The answers are out there...

I wish I could honestly say I don't know anyone who's happy with Vista, but my ASM at work absolutely loves Vista for reasons I do not at all understand. He also takes great pleasure for ribbing me for my love of Linux, and my support of Apple/Mac OS X before windows anything, but he did come to me seeking information on making an entertainment center on Linux.

That said, as much as I am not a Windows loving girl, I have to admit that half the problems people have with windows is due to under powered hardware and poor choices on software to run. Microsoft needs to be much more honest about the minimum system requirements, or at least a lot less lax on what they consider functional.
