It's not half-bad, either! DX11 and the pre-release drivers for my Intel 965 express chipset (which STILL gives me problems on Linux, oddly) improve graphics and game performance. The "peek" feature is great, too (although after you use it awhile the graphics kinda wig out occasionally; should be fixed by final release.) I'm used to the new taskbar and jump lists now. It's definitely better than Vista...as for XP, time will tell on that...
Right now, I'm triple-booting Kubuntu, Vista (which gets almost no attention anymore), and 7.
Despite Windoze 7 and all of it's goodness, I'm Kubuntu, and not looking back anytime soon...

From the stuff I've read and reviewed myself, it isn't really that far from Vista. It still has the sucky FS that M$ felt the need to change the already perfectly fine NTFS (IMO). The reason I state it that way? Because my company has older software that fail to run with that "new" FS. It's handled differently enough that the software does get confused trying to find files or save files. Why don't we upgrade it? My company just can't throw it out because we are a "regulated" industry and to have to trash all previous work due to M$ forcing people to upgrade is just too cost prohibitive. To me it is sad, sad, sad that small companies are forced into these situations. The system is still just way to bulky. Off the soapbox.

And this is so typical of M$ - to create something almost totally M$ specific, and non-conforming to industry standards, forcing users to upgrade. It's underhanded, and totally ignores the users needs. The arrogance that comes out of Redmond, WA is absolutely astonishing.
