Re: Windows 7
I thought: why not, googled, found the M$ page and then they wanted me to register :P And they told me that the OS would stop working on 1. August 2009 :P :P
I thought: the day microsoft make something that doesn't suck is the day the make a vacuum cleaner (old, I know, but ever so true).

Re: Windows 7
Well, I'm nosy, too... I thought their gizmo was communicating exclusively via touchscreen but it obviously can't be.
Anyway, have you installed it yet? If so, what gives?Once your problem is solved please mark the topic of the first post as SOLVED so others know and can benefit from your experience! / FAQ

Found this write up: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...whats-new.aspx
I quite like their adaptation of active desktop borders. Other than that there is nothing I can get excited about...Once your problem is solved please mark the topic of the first post as SOLVED so others know and can benefit from your experience! / FAQ

Re: Windows 7
I'm a bit of a "technofile" always wanting new stuff so I installed Windows 7 today, and i'm must say some of things are not that bad.
It reminds me off a KDE but when I don't find the KDE feature I fast remember that this is Windows 7.
One of these thing was that I was trying to use Widgets in the same way as KDE, but they just didn't listen.
I know some don't want that Linux (KDE in this case) copies from Windows but some of things are logical step forward and should be done.
The ability to put widgets on top of everything is quite useful. And the ability to show only icons in panel instead of whole name is useful to some extent. Or the peek through is also quite good but useless, as you can literally peek through, but can't use this to change between apps with it. And there are probably more features that I will explore in next few days.
And on top of that it really (really) fast. Well didn't time it or compared it to Kubuntu but it's quite responsive...
So I might spend some time playing with it in next couple of days...
But KDE is still far superior even if it lacks some of the features (for now).I'm magnet for errors, problems and bugs...

Re: Windows 7
If you want to know what's up here, sort of, with analysis, screenshots, and some perspective (on XP vs Vista vs 7), but do not wish to install 7 (yet or ever), check it out here:
http://arstechnica.com/articles/paed...s-7-beta.ars/6
(very readable review for the average user)
(btw, fwiw, I have not personally had time to mess with 7, and probably will not have the time to do so--just so no asks me any questions about it; I'm just dropping a review link )

Re: Windows 7
That is a good article. Thanks Qqmike.
I have since found a couple of mirrors where you can download it as a dvd iso (which I am doing at the mo). Wonder whether spyware and stuff is built into them alreadyOnce your problem is solved please mark the topic of the first post as SOLVED so others know and can benefit from your experience! / FAQ

Re: Windows 7
@toad, good question about malware! Read different things, but the time-to-infection is short, like in seconds. I had it happen once to an XP, thinking I'd be safe for 30 minutes or so before installing the A-V stuff.
Windows XP is still good for awhile--like 6 years?
So, that's good. I need to build a new PC soon (any time this year), and so could get an OEM 7 next Fall for $100 from Newegg, but it just doesn't make sense since I still have XP (which I never use, anymore, except to keep it updated/cleaned). Would be nice to find some time to play with 7 a bit, though, just to be conversational about it.

Re: Windows 7
Have downloaded the iso and installed on virtualbox. Unfortunately Windows7 has not been able to detect my network card although
00:04.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet (rev 90)
is nothing exotic by any means! Their (as far as I remember) good help system advised me to troubleshoot my printer. What that has to do with my ethernet card Ballmer only knows. But it is only a beta, so I'll ease off.
I probably have to play with it a bit. So far I can reiterate that their use of active desktop borders is nice if extremely limited. Other than that it looks.. heck, I don't know what it looks like since the last time I used windows on one of my machines was 98SE... Hm, looks like a spiced up version of XP. The taskbar down bottom is downright ugly.
In the five minutes of checking it while writing this post Windows Explorer crashed twice...
I'll keep it on for playing games perhaps. Look forward to reading your experiences!Once your problem is solved please mark the topic of the first post as SOLVED so others know and can benefit from your experience! / FAQ

Re: Windows 7
Thanks! This in particular
The Starter edition is targeted almost exclusively at netbooks and ultra low end computers, as it has a limit of three applications running at the same time. It will only be offered pre-installed by an OEM.
I have now tried a second install on virtualbox. The first one went fine and both host and client OSs worked alright. On the second install, however, (using the same parameteres of course) things are drastically different and Windows comes to a virtual standstill. Will do a third install to see how things pan out... Anybody else out there with different experiences on the same set up?Once your problem is solved please mark the topic of the first post as SOLVED so others know and can benefit from your experience! / FAQ

Re: Windows 7
Uggh... I start a thread on this, and still haven't found time to do it.. primarily because it involves wiping a machine that I haven't booted in a year, and I'm afraid there are files on it that I need to save.... that and I'm still getting a handle on just how much less free time I have as the father of a 1-year-old (that really isn't a complaint mind you, just an observation). Thanks for everyone else keeping the thread alive!

Re: Windows 7
I installed it one of my desktops for awhile. Didn't really see all that much that made me go "WOW". I did run into memory bleed (3gigs of memory) a few times with multiple browsers open (doesn't happen in Ubuntu, Kubuntu or Fedora).
The biggest complaint I had was that they removed Windows Mail and you have to use (or download a mail program) their Live setup for most things. To me, it appears it is their way of getting a little more control without doing it blatantly.
Thats just my opinion.
