Seems to be that in many cases Ubuntu wins. Where it falls down is disk-intensive stuff. Ext3 isn't the best performing filesystem. However, it's rock solid and well supported. For most people, I think that's what matters. Slowly accessible data is better than lost data! And of course Unices make it easy to use different partitions with different filesystems.

If you REALLY want the best performance, you should configure things for such. Probably any of the three could be 'tuned up' to beat them all 'stock'.

I'd be interested to see how distributions that market themselves as performance-oriented shape up.
