Very true. But as far as ACTA goes, this is the part that hurts right now when we need people like him the most.

"The most immediate result of the indictment was Stevens giving up his leadership posts, which he did under Senate protocol. Until Tuesday, he had been the top-ranked senator on the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, as well as the defense subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee".

The Commerce Committe is the one that will have this bill.

Just got this from my Senator. I don't think he really understands our concerns. Sounds like he's working for MS or RIAA.

      Dear Floyd:

Thank you for contacting me with regard to the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). I appreciate hearing from you.

As you know, the U.S. Trade Representative is currently negotiating ACTA with representatives from Canada, the European Union, Japan, and Mexico, among other nations. The agreement would include commitments from the agreed parties to strengthen international cooperation in combating counterfeiting, improve enforcement practices, and provide a better legal framework for international-property (IP) protection enforcement.

I believe it is in our national interest to ensure that the goods and technologies produced by IP-intensive companies in the United States are given proper legal protections, that we pursue counterfeiters both at home and abroad, and that we have an effective process in place to identify and punish those countries that give them safe haven. This is critical to preserving the incentives IP-intensive companies have presently to research and develop new goods and technologies that are significant drivers of economic growth. Having said that, I agree that the process of drafting ACTA must be transparent in order to ensure that privacy and intellectual property rights are protected, and you can be assured that I will continue to monitor developments related to this matter with that principle firmly in mind.

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your views. I will be sure to keep them in mind should the Senate consider ACTA or legislation pertinent to IP protection.

      Sincerely,

      Ken Salazar
      United States Senator

WOW!!!! I agree. I don't think he does understand or he is actually for ACTA. Must be paid by one of the parties that want it.

Bummer! I doubt he's alone in his ignorance, either.

In a small post in our Anchorage Daily News, Friday, August 15, 2008:

"SAN FRANCISCO - In a crucial win for the free software movement, a federal appeals court has ruled that even software developers who give away the programming code for their works can sue for copyright infringement if someone misappropriates that material. The decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit In Washington, D.C., helps clarify a murky area of the law concerning how much control programmers can exert over their intellectual property once it's been released for free into the "open source" software community. People are free to use that material in their own products, but they must credit the original authors of the programming code and release their modifications into the wild as well."

First, this is a trade agreement, which means that it by-passes many of the more open processes for drawing up international agreements. This has allowed it to be discussed in secret, amongst a cosy club of interested parties and their chums – notably, those in industries based on exploiting intellectual monopolies.

It makes it more difficult to distribute free software: Without file sharing and P2P technologies like BitTorrent, distributing large amounts of free software becomes much harder, and more expensive. BitTorrent is a grassroots protocol that allows everyone to contribute to legally distributing free software.
It will make it harder for users of free operating systems to play media: Consumers will no longer be able to buy media without DRM -- and DRMed media cannot be played with free software.
