installing scanners

I just posted on the forum about problems with installing an epson scanner. My question to the powers that be "why is the software for scanners not included with the OS?"

There is a package, available in Adept Manager, that you may want to install - sane:

scanner graphical frontends

This package includes :

o xscanimage, a scanner graphical frontend with GIMP 2.0 support o scanadf, a command-line frontend for scanners with Automatic Document Feeder o xcam, for acquiring images continuously from cameras.
An alternative to xscanimage called xsane is packaged separately.

The scanner frontends use SANE. SANE stands for "Scanner Access Now Easy" and is an application programming interface (API) that provides standardized access to any raster image scanner hardware (flatbed scanner, hand-held scanner, video- and still-cameras, frame-grabbers, etc.). The SANE standard is free and its discussion and development are open to everybody. The current source code is written to support several operating systems, including GNU/Linux, OS/2, Win32 and various Unices and is available under the GNU General Public License (commercial applications and backends are welcome, too, however).

now that i have more time to spend installing my scanner, I installed sane and still get the "no device found" message. " /etc/sane.d", is this right for installation? I can't find sane in the all applications menu, what would be my next step?

I use Kooka for scanning with an HP all in one and never had any trouble.
Does the scanner show up with lsusb(assuming it a usb device).

What is the model of the scanner?

My Epson scanner (Perfection 1640SU) runs perfectly with sane.

On the other hand, they have apparently managed to break the CUPS driver for my Epson printer -- it worked fine until the last kernel upgrade, but I can't get it to print a test page tonight, no matter what I try.

My scanner is an Epson 4490, usb Bus 002 Device 020: ID 04b8:0119 Seiko Epson Corp.
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
as you can tell it is detected

USB devices can be problematic. As you seem to have all the software components installed, try disconnecting the scanner. Shutdown and reboot without the scanner attached. When you are at your desktop, plug in the scanner and see what happens.

Just tried rebooting and plugging scanner in, nothing happened. would there be anything I could do thru root shell or adept manager?

Until there is an open source driver for this scanner you must use the non-free iscan software.
