The Remote Desktop server is only included in Vista Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate versions. The client is included in all versions, so from Vista Home Premium you can Remote Desktop into other machines but you can't control your Vista Home Premium machine remotely because it lacks the server software.

Have you tried TightVNC? I'm running the client on Vista to control my Linux machines. I doubt that they have a server version that runs on Vista, but you could look. However, the VNC experience is really horrible compared to Microsoft's Remote Desktop. Even with TightVNC and maximum compression, it runs at about 1/10th the speed of Remote Desktop.

If you really want a good remote experience you might consider upgrading to Vista Business or Ultimate. I can control my Vista Business machine from my Linux boxes using redesktop 1.5 and tsclient, and it runs pretty fast; almost as good as running Remote Desktop on a Windows machine. But you still need the server client running on Vista to make this work.

The best free Remote desktp solution be it free as in beer and speech or proprietary is NX:

http://nomachine.com/ (the GPL'd core libraries and free for private use server and client for Linux, Mac and Windows.
http://freenx.berlios.de/ (the GPL'd alternative full featured server)

NX is capable of a very intelligent compressed and encrypted X11 (own developement of Nomachine), RDP (Windows) and VNC (very ugly and bandwith killer but everyone uses it...).

        See also Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NX_technology.

        Have fun.

Would NX do what I need it to? Does it work on Vista, which site should I goto?:

          http://nomachine.com/

          OR

Boy, fun is right. I've spent the better part of last week trying to get NX working. From what I've found, avoid freenx and go right for the server versions. The nxserver is in the Ubuntu repository but don't use it; old server and new client don't play well together.

Here is an article that is my latest best hope but I still have not been successful. I can get the server to run, I can get user "nx" to authenticate, I can get authentication into my own account working, but eventually it quits on an error. But I'm picking away at it step by step, one error at a time. Eventually I may even get it to work.

Version 3.0 was just released, and the client is now Vista-compatible. But it looks like the server version won't run on Windows, so that will not be a solution for you.

What should I do Should I just wait for everyone else to catch up to Vista? (and this is coming from the guy who feared the release of Vista stuck w/ his P3 machine worried about software that needs Vista [Direct X 10 or whatever for gaming] and who couldnt afford XP Pro for $100 and hates Micor$oft. I thought I would be the last to get it!)

I dunno. It looks like your choices boil down to:

                  a) Run your apps that you want to remote control on either the XP machine or on your Kubuntu machine.
                  b) If you have to remote control the Vista machine, upgrade your Vista Home Premium to Vista Business or Ultimate.

You could also check into the web-based commercial software (PC Anywhere or GoToMyPC) to see if they work with Vista Home Premium.
