    [CONFIGURATION] updatting Plasma

I am a brand new Kubuntu 24.10 user and old windows user and after installing Kubuntu I keep seeing to update my Plasma version 6.1.5 with 6.4 seeming to be latest one. When I do an update, Plasma is not included. Am I asking in the wrong method setting my install version auto install? Unix is massively different to the user and appreciate all comments and help. I like Kubuntu so far and trying to learn how to use it. Thanks in advance. BobC

Thanks for all input. It is appreciated by this newb to Kubuntu 24.10. Really like it so far. Bob 3/24/25

Plasma 6.4 isn't due until June. The current official release is 6.3.2, with 6.3.3 iirc this week.

Kubuntu doesn't offer major Plasma upgrades between releases, so mostly you upgrade the OS every 6 months to get newer stuff. For example, Kubuntu 25.04 in April will have 6.3.x.
24.10 will be at 6.1.5 for its full 9 month life span.

Normally for the adventurous there is an option to add the kubutnu-backports repo to get newer Plasma releases in non-LTS Kubuntu, but there aren't any upgrades there for 24.10 at the moment.

@claydoh when will the LTS backports have plasma 6 do you wager? and will it be at least 6.2.x... there's not point in making 6.1 available.

Before LTS can get any backports, LTS+1 (24.10) needs to reach EOL (in July), so upgrade paths from the LTS are not broken. This is how it went in 22.04, which was the first time an LTS ever got such upgrades, and via a special PPA . I don't see it being any different this time around.

I imagine it would have whatever KDE decides as its next LTS version if they do set one. If not, probably just behind whatever is in the current release or current in-development release. So maybe Plasma 3 at the least?

This also may depend on whatever external dependencies the newer Plasma and Frameworks need, compared to what is available in 24.04.

That is by far the limiting factor. The requirement of Plasma 6 for much newer Qt6 than is available in 24.04 makes backporting very difficult, and possibly not practical at all for us. Qt6 is not something you can just update in a PPA in isolation, as that would break quite a few non KDE things in the 24.04 archive.
