[DESKTOP] 24.10 to 25.04 upgrade login problems

Hey! I'll jump right in. I was trying to do a clean install of 25.04 from 24.10. It kept freezing as soon as the desktop loaded so i had an old 24.04 pen drive so i decided to rollback. After installing 24.04 i did a do-release-upgrade, again this work but it only brought me to 24.10. This is fine.

Now here's the problem. After updating my nvidia drivers i rebooted. So i got the login screen., i entered my password, the screen flickered and it brought me right back to the login page. I tried rebooting but i got the same issue.

I hit "Ctrl_Alt+F3" and i got a terminal. i keyed in startx and once again i was met with the login screen, but this time after i keyed in the password it loaded the desktop.

While this worked it's not really a long term fix for this issue. Is there anyway to remedy this problem?

Ok i went right back to the beginning and in stalled 24.04, then i upgraded to 24.10. Everything was fine right up until i installed the nvidia drivers and BOOM it's logging me out again.

OK so after some reading and trying i eventually managed to get 24.10 up and running. For some reason clean install of 24.10 wouldn't work either so i installed 24.04 and THEN i installed the driver with
      sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
      sudo apt update

      sudo apt install nvidia-driver-560
after that i ran do-release-upgrade and it brought me up to 24.10. Now i just need to know if i can run the same command to update to 25.04?

Yes, though ideally it is probably safer to roll back to stock nvidia drivers via ppa-purge, as third party repos are a strong cause of upgrade failures. This one *may* be less likely to do so, but I personally recommend rolling back PPAs

        HOWEVER:
I also highly recommend waiting until they send upgrade notifications again - Ubuntu accidentally had this turned on at release day, as they normally hold back for at least a few hours to days. See the stickied posts in this subforum.

Also, don't assume that doing this long and convoluted upgrade path will actually fix things. I have the suspicion it won't. But you never know.
I wish I could determine what it is about your specific hardware combos that are causing problems, or what the likely small tweak you need.
I ditched Nvidia many years ago, when it was arguably a worse situation, but gaming was also a LOT harder. Now, I can't afford even used rtx 20xx cards, and don't have a PC that even has a card slot.
