[RESOLVED] Grub error on new installation

    Hello everyone,

I am a new member and new to Kubuntu. I am hoping to be a long term member, as I love this distro after laying my eyes on it for the first time. I love Linux, but I don't really know what I'm doing. I try to fix things on my own and this isn't the first time I've gotten myself into trouble. After I installed Kubunto and restarted, I got the error message starting with "grub minimal bash like line editing is supported..." A quick Google search says that I have a corrupted Grub. I had Windows, MX Linux and Linux Mint Cinnamon on this machine and I installed Kubuntu on the Mint partition. Before installing Kubuntu, I tried to figure out how to format the drive with Gparted, but I was unsuccessful. I also tried to do it with the Kubuntu live USB, but when I tried to install Gparted it asked for a password that I don't know. I would like to format the entire drive and reinstall Kubuntu. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you just going ot wipe the drive, reboot to the Kubuntu LiveUSB and re-run the installer. It should offer yo the choice to "Use the entire drive". It will reformat and partition the drive to it's defaults.

If you have a specific goal with regards to partitioning, you'd want to do that before running the installer and then use "Manual Partitioning" when installing to control what the installer puts where.

Thank you for the fast response. When I installed Kubuntu it gave me the manual partition process and the automatic. I chose automatic (I think, not sure what it's called) and it only gave me the option to choose one of the partitions, so I chose the Mint partition. I'm having trouble understanding Grub and Gparted amongst many other things with LInux. I'm think of finding a distro that will wipe the drive on install, then install Kubuntu on top of that lol. I'm not sure, sorry for being dumb.

Nah, don't do that. You can wipe the drive from the LiveUSB session, then run the installer.

Just run "KDE Partition Manager" (no password required - just press Enter when asked for a password) , select your drive, select "Partition" and delete all the partitions (assuming that's what you want), then "Apply" and close the partition manager and launch the installer. You should have the "Erase Disk" option.

I recommend choosing "btrfs" as a file system. You'll thank me later.

Jumped through a lot of hoops today and it is still not resolved. I will try to explain as briefly as possible and will post images tomorrow as necessary. I was able to use the Kubuntu live session to run Gparted, apparently you just hit enter when the password prompt comes up. I deleted all of the partitions (that was a mistake) and installed Kubuntu again. This time on reboot it said that there was no OS installed. I went back into the live Kubuntu session and downloaded the Mint ISO and put it on the USB. I was able to install it and on restart, same error message "No OS" or whatever. I rebooted again (this is where the image would be helfpful) and I found an HD reference in the list and selected that and low and behiold it loaded into Mint and it worked on subsequent restarts as well. I decided to try to dual boot it with Kubuntu, but no dice. I cannot find the Kubuntu install. Also, in my boot order/priority or whatever, my old Ubuntu/Mint and MX Linux installations are still listed, but they don't work anymore. I don't know how to fix that or how to find my Kubuntu installation.

Here's a photo of Gparted that shows the Kubuntu partion https://ibb.co/Q7LsbBKy. This is the bios showing the old distros, but no Kubuntu https://ibb.co/1YgJQKm2. This shows the weird Hard Drive entry, but again no Kubuntu https://ibb.co/C5G2QWtk. Thanks

I think it's the HDD2 line towards the bottom. I'm going to restart and give it a try. I'll let you know.

When I went back it was gone. I'm assuming it was a removable disk of some kind. I went back into the Kubuntu live session and deleted Mint. When I restarted I got the Grub error again, but on another restart I was able to choose the HDD option and it loaded into Kubuntu, but does not do it on restart. I have a corrupted Grub / UEFI. Any help on this will greatly appreciated, otherwise I will seek assistance elsewhere. Thank you so much!

I used Boot-Repair and it fixed everything. I think it reinstalled Grub, but I'm note sure. Thanks again and have a good one.
